Jay-Z Partners with Samsung to Launch New Album


During a 3-minute Samsung commercial, Jay-Z announced his new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail. This was during Game 5 of the NBA finals, and showed producers such as Timberland, Rick Rubin, and Pharrell Williams talking about how they need to “write new rules.”

This is where the good part gets in. Samsung users who own the Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note II, and Galaxy S4, will be able to download the new album a full 72 hours before the album is released to the public, and on top of that, the album will  be given away for free to one million lucky device owners.

On June 24, Samsung will release an app into the Play Store that will contain Jay-Z’s new album. However, this app will not unlock until July 4th at 12:01AM EST, where the first million people who have downloaded the app will be able to download the new album for free. After 3 days, the album will be available to the mass public.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Samsung purchased one million albums at $5 a piece.  Essentially, giving Jay Z $5 million in revenue ahead of the release date.  Sounds like a win-win for both sides.

Samsung becomes synonymous with hip-hop and pop culture by partnering up with the hip-hop mogul, and has about two weeks to drive additional sales to their devices before the album release date.

Not much has been publicly announced about this app, but Samsung will be hitting the ground running with tons of downloads for this app upon release.  We shall see if Samsung plans on creating an iTune-like application.

As for Jay-Z, besides the cold hard cash he is getting in the deal, instead of spending money to market the release of his album, he actually got Samsung to promote it, and got paid for it!  Genius…
