AT&T Announces Ultra-Rugged NEC Terrain

Rugged Android smartphones are slowly making their presence felt in the market as more people are looking for devices that can survive water-splashes, drops and dust. While we’ve seen rugged touch screen Android devices NEC is offering one with a physical QWERTY keyboard.

AT&T just announced that they will soon be launching the NEC Terrain on their network. This is a tough 4G device that exceeds the MIL-810G specifications for water, dust and shock resistance. This means that you will be able to use it even under the rain.

The device will become available exclusively online or through the AT&T Business Solutions channels starting June 21. It’s priced at $99 and comes with a two year contract.

Mike Troiano, vice president – Advanced Mobility Solutions, AT&T Business Solutions, announced this device saying that “Businesses have become increasingly mobile and employees need a smartphone that allows them to stay connected no matter where they are. With AT&T Enhanced Push-to-Talk, access to the nation’s largest 4G network and fastest 4G LTE network, communicating is even easier than before so businesses can operate more efficiently and effectively.”

NEC Terrain Technical Specifications

  • Dedicated Enhanced PTT key
  • Speedy 4G LTE connectivity
  • Wi-Fi availability
  • dual core 1.5GHz QualComm Snapdragon S4 processor
  • Android 4.0
  • earSmart technology by Audience and NEC Terrain’s dual speakers
  • Physical QWERTY keyboard with a 3.1” high resolution screen
  • 5 MP rear camera and 0.3 MP front camera.

The NEC Terrain is enclosed in texturized rubber making it look indestructible. You can throw it on the ground, dunk it in water or smear mud on it and it will still work perfectly fine.

One downside to this model is that because of its extra protection the device is bulky. While this won’t bother people looking for tough devices it will be a minus factor for those who want a slim smartphone.
