Rumor: Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom Smartphone Coming In The Summer With 16 MP Camera

Despite failing to make the Galaxy Camera a mainstream hit in the technology world, Samsung has big plans for the future regarding the blurring of lines between smartphones and digital cams. A second-gen Galaxy Camera is allegedly in the works for a while now, but the biggest bomb Sammy might be dropping in the near future is something called the Galaxy S4 Zoom.

Something like this, but closer to the S4 design-wise and with voice communications support.

According to Sam Mobile, the GS4 Zoom is to be Samsung’s first ever camera phone, meaning it will have one selling point and only one – the rear-facing snapper. This will reportedly sport a 16 MP sensor, which is a novelty in the Android world, but still a long way from Nokia’s 41 MP cam fitted on last year’s 808 PureView phone.

But we know very well a cam’s quality is not all about the megapixel count, so something tells us that if Samsung will market this S4 Zoom as a “camera phone”, it will really rock an awesome shooter.

The rest of the features rumored for the Zoom include a pretty modest 4.3-inch qHD (960 x 540 pixels resolution) AMOLED screen, just 8 GB of on-board storage, microSD support, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, plus the running of Android Jelly Bean (likely 4.1) with the TouchWiz Nature UX on top.

Mind you, this is going to be a smartphone and not a smart cam like the Galaxy Camera, so it will come with support for GSM voice communication too. As for the processor and RAM, those have apparently not been “decided yet”, which sounds a little fishy given Sam Mobile’s sources told the website the S4 Zoom will be launched sometime in June or July.

In any case, you shouldn’t expect the fellow to be equipped with 2 gigs of RAM or an octa-core CPU. Even a quad-core chipset seems like a slim possibility looking at that petite, low-res display and the 8 GB of storage, but hey, it’s not like a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 clocked at, say, 1.5 GHz would be so bad, right?

Codenamed SM-C1010, the GS4 Zoom is most definitely going to follow Galaxy S4’s design “philosophy”, meaning it might look very similar to the recently unveiled Galaxy Core. As for pricing, it’s nearly impossible to hope to make an accurate prediction at this time, but one thing is clear nevertheless – this thing needs to be cheaper than the Galaxy Camera. How about $400, Sammy? Or, if you really want to sell millions of these, $350.
