Huawei Ascend P6 (Honor 3?) Spotted in China, Definitely the World’s Thinnest Smartphone

Oppo might have failed to break any slimness records with the recently unveiled R809T, but the world’s thinnest smartphone crown is once again being challenged. This time by Huawei, whose P6-U06 device has been spotted getting certification from China’s TENAA, meaning it’s bound to become official soon.

The P6-U06 is apparently just 6.18 mm thick, which is roughly 0.3 mm thinner than Alcatel’s One Touch Idol Ultra, the current ruler of the anorexic smartphones. Or, if you prefer, the Huawei phone is less than a quarter of an inch thick and 1/64 of an inch thinner than the Idol Ultra.

Of course, most people don’t really care about such shallow records, crowns and titles, which is why you’re probably more interested in what this slender little guy packs beneath its hood. Well, let’s just say the thing is no Samsung Galaxy S4 killer, but it’s still worthy of a place in the high-end smartphone niche.

The 4.7-inch display “only” boasts a 1,280 x 720 pixels resolution, but the CPU/RAM combo is close to ideal – a 1.5 GHz quad-core Hisilicon K3V2 processor, plus 2 gigs of memory. The two cameras fitted on the device are not bad either, with the rear-facing one sporting an 8 MP sensor, while the secondary one is a 2 MP unit.

There’s no sign of 4G LTE connectivity on the Huawei P6-U06, but one thing we’re glad to see is the running of Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Other “known” features include GPS, micro USB, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and microSD support, though the on-board storage remains a mystery for now.

Apparently set to be made available in black, white and pink, the phone is not just extremely thin, but also very, very light. It weighs in at 120 grams, which is 13 grams lighter than the Samsung Galaxy S3. Sounds like Huawei has a winner here, at least from a design standpoint, right?

Of course, one has to wonder what kind of battery such a phone can accommodate, but hey, let’s just focus on the positive for now.

The P6-U06 is most likely due for an official announcement in China over the next few weeks under one of two brandings. Either the thing will be marketed as the Ascend P6, or it will be called the Honor 3 and follow in the footsteps of last year’s Honor 2. The latter makes a lot more sense, but that model number still keeps the former in the cards.

Regardless of that, this new Huawei phone sounds pretty special, so fingers crossed to see it released outside China too. Am I right or am I right?
