Eric Schmidt, Google’s Chairman, was at the All Things D conference earlier today and he gave some really good info about the Android mobile operating system from the company. The Chairman said, among other things, that the mobile operating system is doing really good in terms of market share and market reach. The figures he gave are really impressive. He said that the daily activations of the Android mobile operating system have reached 1.5 million a day. Yes, that is 1.5 million new Android devices being activated daily.
And that translates to 740 million Android devices in the open across 320 carriers in 160 countries. That is just like awesome. And this number is increasing constantly. A part of the credits for this goes to Samsung, the South Korean Android smart phone giant who has got Android smart phones from the low end inexpensive ranges to very high end smart phone which are considered one of the best smart phones in the world. The company says that the secret of this success is the $100 price tag on most of its smart phones.
“Android is by far the primary vehicle by which people are going to see smartphones,” Schmidt said. “Our goal is to reach everybody.”
There was a question to the Chairman asking how the relationship between Samsung and Google is, and Eric Schmidt says that the relationship is just good, and that it has turned into a “defining one.” Eric was also asked about the products that we can expect from the Google subsidiary, Motorola. Schmidt said that the company is bringing out some really cool stuff, phenomenal to be exact.
“They have a new set of products, which are phenomenal,” he told Ina Fried and Liz Gannes at D: Dive into Mobile today. “Very, very impressive.”
We are all interested to see what Motorola will bring to the market, but I guess we will have to just wait for it.
