Popular social networking site twitter is planning to launch a new music app for Apple users called Twitter Music, a little birdie tell us. The app has been designed for iOS and will make its debut on Apple devices before any other operating system. The app has been created to help users stream music through SoundCloud and discover new artists. The technology for Twitter Music comes from former We Are Hunted, a startup company based in San Francisco that was acquitted by twitter last year.
Twitter Music on iPhone, iPads and iPods offers users different tabs, the Suggestions tab, Popular tab and the Now Playing tab. Suggestions recommends music to users based on previous history and patterns, Popular keeps track of the popular tracks and NowPlaying displays songs tweeted by users you follow on twitter. An interesting aspect of the app is that users do not need to open a twitter account to use it. A clever move by twitter to increase its reach worldwide.
Twitter Music will compete with Tumblr’s music section on it’s explore page and Facebook’s feed for music. Companies like Apple and Google are already working on apps for their iOS and android devices respectively to allow users to stream music directly from the app store to their handsets and tablets. Apple is also looking at streaming music from its iTunes store directly to Widescreen TV’s using iPhones and the Apple TV service. iOS and android users have terrific choice when it comes to music and video, with options from the device’s native store as well as apps offered from social networking sites like Facebook and twitter.
The new app is an interesting development from Twitter, one that is sure to be followed up with video streaming in the near future.
