March marks the spring time in the Western world, so it is also a good time for Inhabitat to feature its new Green technology innovations such as the bee venom that could possibly bring treatment to people with HIV, flying robot bees that can pollinate flowers and a prototype of Digitizer desktop 3D scanner.
There are also other innovative Green technology in the industries of energy and architecture, but let’s focus first on the three innovations mentioned above.
Bee Venom Enhanced to Kill HIV
Since HIV was first discovered in 1980, researchers and medical experts have continually searched for a cure. That remains a failure though until maybe perhaps this new finding from a research done by Washington University.
The research said that bee venom may provide a certain treatment for people with HIV. Bee venom carries a toxin called melittin, which can penetrate the protective envelope surrounding HIV cells. To destroy HIV, the team will use nanoparticles with bee venom. The nanoparticles can then attack HIV without necessarily harming nearby cells. If successful, this will be a major breakthrough for the possible treatment of HIV.
Melittin though is a powerful and a harmful toxin, so researchers need to be very careful when dealing with it since it has a potential of harming humans. But when combined with nanoparticles, the toxin will be less harmful to the surrounding cells.
Aside from HIV, bee venom can also possibly cure hepatitis B and C.
Flying Robobees to Help Pollinate Flowers
If you don’t know already, honey bee population has been steadily declining because of a host of reasons ranging from super mites to colony collapse disorder to cell phone radiation. This is unacceptable though because honey bee is significant to the world’s ecosystem.
Because of its significance, a team of Harvard and Northeastern University scientists are working on flying Robobees that can pollinate flowers. In the future, these Robobees will hopefully be able to do the job of real bees as well.
This project will hopefully push the envelope further for micro-robotics technology. The scientists hope that there will be more awareness when it comes to the benefits of miniature robotics. In the end, this project will also pave the way for search-and-rescue missions using robots, climate mapping and traffic monitoring.
MakerBot Advances to 3D Scanning
Already the biggest name when it comes to 3D printing, now MakerBot has set its eyes on 3D scanning. Bre Pettis, the company’s CEO, recently announced the launch of the Digitizer. The scanner consists of a turntable on which you can put miniature objects you want to scan and eventually print in 3D format. The objects will be scanned by sensors and digitized into computer files.
For those of you who have seen the movie Tron, I’m sure you will easily get the picture. With this kind of technology, Pettis said that anyone can have their own studio at home.
Green technology is becoming increasingly important in the industry today. After all, it effectively combines the advance movement of technology with the natural order of things, which, if you think about it, is the best way to embrace the fusion of technology and the environment.
