This year we saw the release of many new smart phones like the Xperia Z, LG Optimus G Pro, Galaxy S4 etc. Among these, Samsung’s Galaxy lineup is held to be the greatest smart phone lineup ever built with each of its flagship device receiving the best smart phone of the year award. The last two years were pretty smooth for Samsung as no other competitors could match the specifications or the technology incorporated in their smart phones. However, this year, things might not be that easy for the South Korean company with lots of worthy competitors like HTC One, Xperia Z, optimus G pro etc. However, the most imminent threat to the Galaxy S4 is none other than HTC One.
So, today, we are going to compare both these beasts and will finally decide which one comes out to be the winner.
Design, Dimensions and Build Quality:
Both the devices have almost the same dimensions. Galaxy S4 has a dimension of 5.38 x 2.75 x 0.31 inches while HTC One has a dimension of 5.4 x 2.7 x 0.36 inches. HTC One is slightly heavy with its full Aluminum unibody design and weighs about 5 oz while Samsung Galaxy S4 weighs only about 4.59oz.
As mentioned above, HTC One is superior in looks due to its unibody aluminum design. The Galaxy S4 has a plasticky build just like the ones found on the earlier Galaxy lineup.
However, there is one major drawback with HTC One. The unibody design of the device meant that you do not get a removable back cover or a MicroSD Card slot. Galaxy s4’s compromise on the build quality is paid off here as it offers Micro SD Slot and a removable back cover.
But the lack of a Micro SD Card Slot may not hurt many users as they can opt for a 64GB variant which is more than enough for all of your apps and content.
When we look at the displays of both these smart phones, we ll see that they are significantly different from each other. Galaxy S4 sports a 5 inch display with Corning Gorilla glass 3 while the HTC One has a slightly smaller 4.7 inch screen with Corning Gorilla Glass 2. The only similarity in the display of these devices is that they sport the same resolution, 1920×1080.
Taking advantage of the slightly smaller screen, HTC One boasts a pixel density of 468 while this figure is slightly smaller in the 5 inch S4 with a pixel density of 441 PPI.
Another striking difference is the addition of the super sensitive touch feature (like the one found in Lumia 920) in Galaxy S4 which allows a user to operate the phone while wearing gloves.
Processor and Storage:
Last year HTC tried to capture the market with its first quad core phone, HTC One. But it was easily beaten by the Galaxy S3 due to its faster processor and 2 GB RAM.
This year HTC made sure that their flagship device features the best specs in the market. As a result, we see that both HTC One and Galaxy S4 have similar hardware. HTC One runs on the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 SoC with 2 GB Ram. The S4 will also run on same Qualcomm Snapdragon quad core processor with 2 GB Ram.
However, when we compare the storage options given by both the devices, Galaxy S4 quite obviously comes out as the winner. Although HTC One offers storage options of 32 and 64 GB, it does not have a Micro SD Card Slot. The Galaxy S4 beats HTC One in this regard as it offers 16, 32 and 64 GB internal storage option along with a Micro SD Card slot.
Other features like the User Interface and the camera would be compared in detail in the next part.
