Frontline Commando: D-Day Android Game Review

Glu Mobile has just released their latest WWII game over at the Android platform. Frontline Commando: D-Day is the sequel to the company’s popular Frontline Commando title. The setting is several years prior to the first title and occurs during the Normandy landings of WWII.

You can now download Frontline Commando: D-Day over at Google Play for free. While it’s free it does come with in-app purchases which you can’t disable. You will need a device running on at least Android 2.1 as well as a storage space of 289 MB. It’s recommended that you install this on a tablet since its large display will make your gaming experience better compared to the small screen offered by smartphones.

The game is more of a gallery shooter than a third person shooter. You move from cover point to cover point clearing out the enemies in that area. You will only advance to the next cover point if you eliminate all enemies in a particular area. Each level has its own objectives which you must accomplish. Examples are completing a level in a specified time or having a specific number of headshots. Accomplishing your objectives not only advances you to the next level but also earns you rewards points.

As you play the game you will also earn cash which you can use to purchase upgrades from the shop. The sad part of this is that the most powerful weapons can only be unlocked if you pay real world cash. This pay to win system is all too common in most Glu Mobile titles which have usually discouraged players from picking up their titles.

The controls are pretty standard and use virtual buttons. As far as graphics goes the game is pretty slick and impressive.

Some of the game features include

  • Stunning console quality visuals
  • Experience 5 separate campaigns with 145 separate missions based on the actual beach landings; Juno, Sword, Utah, Gold and Omaha
  • Battle your way into the heart of enemy territory
  • Take to the frontline with an array of classic weapons from World War 2

Frontline Commando: D-Day is an entertaining shooter whose only drawback is its overpowered weapons which can be unlocked by paying cash.
