Mobile World Congress 2013 is happening in Barcelona and this is the most exciting time of the year for mobile phone enthusiasts because we will be witnessing a lot of new devices from range of manufacturers.
We saw Huawei launch the Ascend P2, which they claim to be the world’s fastest smartphone. Here’s another beastly smartphone from a company which I didn’t expect – Alcatel. Alcatel, as a company, isn’t known for making devices with high end hardware, but it is definitely trying to change that image by launching the One Touch Idol X. To start with, it’s a very good looking phone. This is the third phone the company is launching in the One Touch Idol series, and this one is perhaps the best one until now.
At 7mm thickness, it is a bit thicker than its predecessor, Idol Ultra, which was just 6.45mm, but since it’s a 5″ set, 7mm is probably the thinnest one could manage to get. Most of the smartphone manufacturers are migrating to 5 inch 1080p full HD displays, and even Alcatel is joining the bandwagon via Idol X. The Idol X’s giant 1080p IPS display is fantastic to look at and Jelly Bean is powered by quad core MediaTek MT6589 1.2GHz CPU. Like many of Alcatel’s other sets, the device will be available in both 13 and 8-megapixel variants. Both the versions will have 1080p front facing cameras, and buyers can choose between dual or single-SIM configuration. There will be microSD slot available. It should be noted that this device doesn’t support LTE, but it does support 42Mbps HSPA+ connectivity, quad-band GSM and offers dual-band UMTS in both 900MHz / 2100MHz or 850MHz / 2100MHz frequencies, which could mean that this phone will not see light on day in the US and is targeted towards the international market.
Quality wise, the device looks awesome. You can check out the device at Alcatel’s stall in MWC 2013. Alcatel is a company which concentrates more on mass market, and one cannot go wrong with a low priced device. Despite having a low price tag, Alcatel manages to maintain reasonable build quality. The device will have16GB of internal storage and a 2,000 mAh battery. The only thing I’m skeptical about the device is that it makes use of a 2,000 mAh battery for its power needs, and since it is having a 5 inch display with full HD resolution, the battery may not last long. They have compromised with the battery in order to attain the thickness of 7mm, and perhaps they should consider increasing the battery pack capacity even though it will bump up the thickness a bit.
Apart from the 2,000 mAh battery, everything looks great. The design isn’t completely new, but it’s a refreshing one. Talking of the company, it’s a French smartphone manufacturer. Pricing is the key, and Alcatel is known to price their products reasonably, and I hope they do the same with One Touch Idol X. What are your thoughts on One Touch Idol X?
