Samsung overtakes Apple to become the biggest smart connected device manufacturer

According to an IDC report, Samsung has replaced Apple to become the largest smart connected device manufacturer in the world. The report defines a smart connected device as any device like laptop, netbook, tabets, smartphones and PCs. The report clearly states that Samsung has overtaken Apple by shipping a staggering 250 million smart connected device in 2012. With this huge spurt in shipping as compared to 2011, Samsung has acquired a market share of 20.8%, an increase of over 8% as compared to 2011’s share of 12.3%. This comes as a result of the high growth of the industry and the demand for new and better products from the market.

Apple, however, couldn’t capitalize the high growth and has fallen to second place with its 18.2% market share. Report also adds that the difference between the first and the second place could have been more if they had not bounced back last year with the launch of iPhone 5 and iPad mini.

The smart connected device market has been growing rapidly and a total of 367.7 million units were shipped in Q4 of 2012 alone in this segment. This means that the market had grown by 28.3% as compared to 2011. According to the report, in all 1.2 billion devices were shipped last year alone which was 29.1% higher than 2011. The growth in this segment is mainly driven by smartphones and tablets as PCs and laptops are unable to compete with the former devices.

Ryan Reith, program manager, Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers at IDC,explained, “Smartphones and tablets are growing at a pace that PCs can’t realistically keep up with because of device prices and to some extent disposability,”

Hence, it was quite obvious that smart phones took the lead in the segment with a market share of more than 60%. Laptops followed behind with a humble 16%. Desktops and tablets came next with a market share of 12% and 10% respectively. When it xcomes to growth, smart phones and tablets have shown great potential, however, desktops and notebooks shipments fell by 4.8% and 3.8% respectively.

To sum up, in the smart device connected category, Samsung is on the top by shipping 250 million units last year and bagging a market share of 20.1%. Closely behind, Apple takes the second spot by shipping 218 million devices in 2012 with a market share of 18.2%. Lenovo and HP take the third and fourth spot respectively. The difference between the second and the third spot is quite large with Lenovo having a market share of only 6.5% as compared to Apple’s 18%. Finally, Dell takes the fifth spot in this table with a market share of 3.2%.
