3D printing with stem cells will be able to print human body organs

Have you ever wondered if human body parts can be “manufactured” in a factory like all the smart phones, smart TVs, and laptops that we use on an hourly basis are manufactured? Well, if you had asked me this question even a couple of months ago, I would have laughed it off saying it was a very mature imagination. But if you ask me that today, I would say that the possibility of that happening is very good, in the future though.

This is because researches in the field of human biology and technology have come together to be able to 3D print human body organs, but not just yet. They are taking baby steps and they have been able to print out 3D spheroids, the little bubbles in the liquids you can see in the image above. I know this is nowhere close to a human organ, but you would be surprised to know that the ink used in the 3D printer for printing this was a bunch of stem cells.

What does that mean for the future? Well, you put in a bunch of stem cells into the cartridge of the 3D printer, design the body part you want to print, and hit the Print button. You will be getting a very natural looking and working human body parts which you will be able to use in transplants. This will eliminate the lists and qualifications needed today for transplants.

This breakthrough in technology has been achieved by researchers at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland in collaboration with Roslin Cellab, a stem cell technology company. Dr. Will Shu is part of the research team working on the project. “In the longer term, we envisage the technology being further developed to create viable 3D organs for medical implantation from a patient’s own cells, eliminating the need for organ donation, immune suppression, and the problem of transplant rejection,” Shu said in a release from Heriot-Watt.
