Popular Chinese phone manufacturer Xiaomi plans to enter the North American market by 2014 or 2015 according to it’s a spokesperson of the company. The company had a successful 2012 selling 7.19 million phones which generated nearly US$2 billion in revenue. This year they expect to sell 10 million smartphones.
The company wants to gain market share by expanding overseas with initial plans to launch in Hong Kong and Taiwan soon.
Rumors however suggest that the real reason why the company has made it big in China in a short span of time is that they are selling their smartphone models at a loss. One of their popular models which is the MI-Two is being described as an iPhone competitor which comes with premium specification but at a cheaper price. The company has however adopted a long-term strategy in terms of viability of its business so if the rumors are true or not will not affect the bottom line.
Although the company has not disclosed how they are going to go about entering the US market we hope that they do it right. Almost all of the major carriers offer handsets that are subsidized as long as people subscribe to contracts. To be able to remain competitive they will have to provide smartphones with all the latest cool features at low cost.
Xiaomi is currently one of the brands dominating the Chines mobile market today. The other popular brands are Lenovo, Huawei and ZTE.
In other related news the company has recently announced that their MIUI rom has already been downloaded more than 10 million times. This ROM allows anyone with a non –Xiaomi device to have the cool looking Xiaomi interface in their smartphones.
Xiaomi is a relatively new Chinese company founded in 2010. Its current headquarters is in Beijing and they are well known for their low priced high quality products.
