Corning Gorilla Glass 3 To Debut At CES

Smartphone displays are about to get tougher as Corning has announced that they will be unveiling their latest product called the Gorilla Glass 3 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).  While you might think that the current Gorilla Glass 2 is already tough wait till you meet its successor which the company says offers three times the protection offered by the original product.

Corning says that more than a billion smartphones worldwide are using their glass in displays and this number will increase even more as they push their new product to the market.

The company says that they have improved Gorilla Glass 3 at a molecular level in a feature they call Native Damage Resistance (NDR). This improvement makes the glass much stronger and reduces the appearance of scratches. Overall this new product will be three times more scratch resistant, has a 40% reduction in visible scratches and will have a 50% boost of strength even when the glass becomes flawed.

The increase in the glass strength does not necessarily mean that your smartphone or tablet won’t break after you drop it from 10 feet into a concrete however you’ll definitely feel more secure knowing it has an added protection.

So far Corning has not made any announcement as to when this new product will be making its way to mobile devices. Judging from past experiences though, it normally takes 4 to 5 months after they have announced the product.

Corning will be displaying the Gorilla glass 3 as well as their other new product called Optical Cables by Corning at The Corning booth, #14813 Central Hall.

According to Wendell P. Weeks, chairman, chief executive officer and president, in a press release made “This year at CES, Corning will demonstrate its industry leadership in specialty glass and fiber optic technologies with the introduction of two products designed to enhance and extend the capabilities of consumers’ favorite devices. These new innovations build on the increasingly important and continually evolving role of highly engineered glass technologies in delivering improved product performance and functionality through touch capabilities, protective cover glass, and device connectivity.”
