Microsoft’s new marketing strategy with the DroidRage campaign yesterday garnered a lot of eyeballs. Expectedly, Windows Phone fans were quick to jump onto the Android hater bandwagon. But now it seems like Microsoft’s media campaign has backfired, as a new Twitter hashtag #windowsrage has taken birth. This has been created by users who thought the DroidRage campaign was a useless marketing gimmick. Microsoft certainly might not have seen this one coming. Microsoft’s poke at Android for being malware friendly is a little too old, beginning from last year. After that though, the company got busy focusing on its own products and took a temporary halt from the bashing. Now with Windows Phone 8 smartphones gradually rolling out in the market, Microsoft decided to spark off the new campaign again, but to little effect. Most people know the pros and cons of a mobile OS today, so it’s almost as if Microsoft is desperate to get any attention from the public.
Microsoft has always been known to make attacks on Google, and this just reaffirms it. Some time ago, the company’s Bing Search group started off the scroogled campaign, mocking Google’s alleged unfair trade practices. This one however took all of that a step further and the rest is history. We don’t expect Google to even dignify this with a comment, as the whole episode has pretty much toned down now. We all remember the Windows Phone challenge Microsoft set up in malls to convince customers that Windows Phone is the way to go. However, the volunteers only picked devices which were at least an year old so as to not mess up the challenge. One Galaxy Nexus user even beat the Windows Phone challenge, but was refused of any credit claiming that he cheated. Such is the marketing of Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS. With Windows Phone 8, things have certainly intensified and we can partially empathize with Microsoft for going down this road. After all, if you can’t beat your competition, poke fun at them. That’s the easiest way to go.
It is hoped that Microsoft will try to focus on its own products and the problems surrounding the platform, rather than beating around the bush with similar campaigns one after another.
