Google has just released an update to Gmail in the Play Store, which has brought it up to version 4.2. This brings the app on par with the version that has been shipping with their newly released Nexus devices. They’ve also updated the Galaxy Nexus with it as well. Some of the enhancements that users will experience in the app include auto-fitting text in emails and pinch-to-zoom within emails, a feature that has been requested for quite some time now. Google has also added a new feature that will allow you to easily archive and delete messages.
Unfortunately, users that aren’t rocking Android 4.0 or above won’t be seeing these new features. Although, you will still notice performance enhancements whether you’re above Android 4.0 or not. And hey, maybe a fit-to-screen and pinch-to-zoom feature will come to lower versions of Android in the future.
Now, when users update the app, they’ll notice that the pinch-to-zoom feature actually isn’t working. It is working, users just need to enable it in the settings because it is turned off as a default. Keep in mind that turning the pinch-to-zoom on will also format your e-mails to fit the screen as well. The swiping features to archive and/or delete messages are also extremely helpful!
