Yahoo Inc. Chief Executive Officer Marissa Mayer provided just little details of her company’s next plans but stressed the importance of the booming mobile industry to the internet giant during last night’s event hosted by Fortune.
Mayer, who assumed Yahoo’s top front office job since July 16, graced Fortune’s Most Powerful Women dinner in New York on Tuesday.
During the event, Mayer offered some insights about Yahoo’s upcoming projects, although she did not take it deeper into her plans. Nevertheless, Mayer pointed out the role of growing mobile market in the company’s reversal.
“We have a terrific set of assets on the web–all the things people want to do on their mobile phone,” said Mayer, who became Yahoo’s sixth chief executive officer in the last five years.
Yahoo has been in a decline in the internet business over the last few years, allowing rival Google to build a significant edge and now facing other competitors in the social media market like Facebook and Twitter.
But the hiring of Mayer in July could turn things around for Yahoo, who believes the self-proclaimed Silicon Valley female geek has the ability to inject fresh ideas into their business.
Mayer, who gave birth to her first son in October, said Yahoo is set to capitalize on the strong market demand for smartphones largely because of its ability to provide various contents and information on any Android or iOS-powered devices.
“The interesting thing is when you look at what people want to do on their phone, it’s mail, weather, check stock quotes and news. That’s Yahoo’s business. This is a huge opportunity for us because we have the content and all the information people want on their phones,” Mayer added.
Still, Mayer made it clear that she also wants to bring Yahoo back to its roots by coming up with an array of products that would satisfy its customers.
