Samsung dominates US, Global Smartphone Market in Q3 2012

Despite the fierce competition and chains of international lawsuits against Apple, Samsung brand is emerging on top of the US and global smartphone markets in the third quarter of this year.

A recent survey conducted by the leading Internet technology firm, ComScore revealed that Samsung remains on top among the handset makers these days, garnering a 26 percent market share for the period of September. The figure is based on smartphone and non-smartphone products currently available in the US market. It denotes a boost from the previous sales figure the South Korean electronics giant acquired during the period of June at 25.6 percent. Respondents of ComScore’s latest survey were more than 30,000 US mobile subscribers.

According to Samsung, its operating profit in the third quarter increased by 91 percent while earnings for the quarter ending on September 30th rose at $47.5 billion. Half of that figure is contributed by Samsung’s Mobile Communications division with $23.9 billion in revenue.

Besides the United States, the South-Korean multinational conglomerate firm also dominated the international smartphone market with Google’s Android operating system, running on 75 percent of overall smartphones distributed across the globe in the third quarter of the current year.

According to a research firm IDC, Samsung has acquired 56.3 million sales in Q3 covering the months of July through September 2012. The figure depicts more than double of Apple’s 26.9 million iPhone sales in Q3 2012. The iPhone-maker’s market share has increased by 2.1 to 17.5 percent share.

Android –powered smartphones rule

Meanwhile, Google-backed mobile platform retained its authority among other smartphone operating systems with a 52.5 percent share in the third period, marking an increase of about 1 percent from the second quarter. Apple’s iOS followed the lead with an increase of 1.9 percent or 34.3 percent share in Q3 of 2012.

Michael Walkley, a Canaccord Genuity analyst estimated that the Korean firm would be able to sell 303.6 million handsets in 2013 while the American iPhone-maker is likely to sell 194 million iPhones and 102 million iPad units. If true, then this would give Apple a potential 58.4 percent share of tablet’s trading.

Smartphones powered by Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 software also posted a boost in the third quarter, increasing the company’s market share by 2 percent.

Microsoft has just launched its pioneering Windows Phone 8 handsets along with an increasing archive of apps, music and other relevant services.

BlackBerry and Symbian smartphones however showed a contradicting result, as their market shares deteriorated in the third quarter.

Kevin Restivo, an IDC senior analyst said that the recent success of Samsung and Android iOS smartphones is definitely not a coincidence but rather yielded by the availability of desirable applications and digital contents, including films, music and games.

So far, the majority (106 percent of smartphone’s profits) of smartphone trading’s profit this year is controlled by Apple and Samsung but the latter prevailed in terms of overall revenue at $7.4 billion during the third quarter of 2012, with its flagship Galaxy S3’s market boost.

Samsung’s best-seller Galaxy S3 became one of the successful Android smartphones of all time. A total of 20 million units were sold in its first days on sale.

Apple will try to beat Samsung’s reputation by releasing its in-demand iPad Mini and iPad 4 on Friday.

While experts foresee Samsung to continue its dominance in the smartphone industry next year, the advent of Windows Phones along with Apple’s latest generation of iPhones and iPad tablets could indicate coercions in business.
