Retina implant allows patients to read ordinary text as braille

New promises and new hopes for millions of those who are destitute of vision. The new technique in retinal prostheses will secure life of many. Although there were sincere and continuous efforts from the researchers over the past years but users always had difficulty in reading the text. Argus II retinal prosthesis system works by transmitting images from a face-mounted camera to nerves at the back of the eye with electrical signals which replaces the braille images in place of text. Wireless signals are picked up by a receiver in the sclera, commonly known as the white of the man’s eye and transported to an array of electrodes appended to the surface of his retina. Further the electrodes then activate and energize the nerve cells in order to communicate and broadcast the Braille patterns to the man’s brain, exactly in the same way which appears to him.

The Existing eye implants can allow patients to observe and distinguish the normal text, but only in large fonts, at very minimum distances and it takes almost ten seconds to interpret each letter, which means words can take minutes to read and understand it completely.

Research was done on a patient and they concluded that 89 percent of individual braille letters and between 60 and 80 percent of two- to four-letter words can be identified easily by the patient. Further the patient could see the patterns that was projected and could read individual letters in less than a second .The researchers hope to attain speeds of about 120 letters per minute, although visually reading braille takes longer than to interpret and analyze the letters via touch. The patient in the study could read braille faster than ordinary text which is a highly appreciable. Any word, for example “research” would have taken several minutes to read and understand accurately but this new efficient technique of implant has made it easier, quick and simpler. This new advanced technique has given new belief and aspiration to thousands of people with conditions like retinitis pigmentosa, where light-sensing cells in the retina die causing partial or total blindness to start a new life and to see the world again.

Researchers have got the motivation and new study will be done on more people to corroborate and validate the theories and study that have been made. This provides plausible and credible ambitions to get some people back the visual realization.
