The tablet market is certainly getting heated up with the holiday season quickly approaching. And with that, there’s going to be a lot of price cuts and discounts on offer for the customers. First up is Barnes & Noble which recently unveiled the Nook HD and Nook HD+. B&N however is offering discounts on older gen tablets like the Nook Tablet and Nook Color. It seems more like a clearance sale really, as the likes of the Nexus 7 and the iPad Mini are arriving, there’s not enough room in the market for eBook readers anymore. The Nook Color and Nook Tablet are almost on the verge of extinction much like the E-Ink based eBook readers were a couple of years ago. But B&N wouldn’t mind that with the new range of Nooks taking their places quite comfortably.
The Nook Color will now retail at just $139 and the Nook Tablet will sell for $159 and $179 for the 8 and 16GB models respectively. That’s not a bad deal for the holiday season, especially if you’re looking to gift something for your nephews or kids. It seems like B&N wants to price it on par with the Amazon Kindle Fire which also retails at $159. What’s particularly interesting though is that there’s no price drops on the Nook HD and Nook HD+ yet, which is understandable as it is still only up for pre-order with official availability scheduled for some time this month.
I think it’s the end of the road for the Nook Color which is struggling for survival with the arrival of newer, fancier tablets. Tablets these days need to do a lot more than just read eBooks and B&N understands that pretty well. The Nook HD and HD+ will vie against the likes of the iPad Mini, the Nexus 7 and the two variants of the Amazon Kindle Fire HD when it’s launched in the coming days.
