With every new major version of Android that Google releases, the company also announces a piece of hardware from a third party manufacturer which will offer the vanilla flavour of the operating system. And this year, for the first time, it was a tablet. And yes of course, we are talking about the Nexus 7 tablet that Asus is manufacturing. We are very sure that the tablet is doing in the market. But how good, we did not know as the search engine giant has not released any sales figures.
But recently, at Asus’s third quarter earnings meeting, the company’s CFO David Chang gave out a few numbers, which are really great. David Chang said, “at the beginning, it was, for instance, 500K units a month, then maybe 600, 700K. This latest month, it was close to 1 million”.
If you do some math out of this and calculate the rough number of units of the Nexus 7 tablet that the company might have sold till date, it would come up to 2.8 million units, with an average of around 700,000 units per month, according to Pocket Now. And if the latest sales figures continue throughout the year, the companies would sell a total of up to five million units this year. But of course, that is nothing compared to Apple iPad’s sales figures.
The Cupertino tech giant sold 14 million units of the iPad in the last quarter alone. And as the company has announced the new 7.9 inch iPad Mini, and it has already sold out in the pre order phase, the competition would be good. But as the company has not yet announced the number of pre orders made, we are still not sure how that compares to Nexus 7’s sales. But I guess we will soon be finding out.
