Those who are excited to set their sights on the successor of the Asus Padfone will be delighted to check out this official announcement. On the Asus website, the company has put up a teaser for the upcoming arrival of the Padfone 2, with the words “It’s intuitive!” and “It’s coming on October 16.” Moreover, there is an invitation for those who will not be able to be physically present in the Milan, Italy event to watch their streaming video, live from the event. The press event will happen at 11am Milan time, UTC +2. This online announcement is congruent with previous invitations for two separate press events for the same product happening in Milan and Taipei, Taiwan.
This is Asus’s second attempt to entice the public to give attention to this three-in-one hybrid device that permits users to seamlessly transfer from a smartphone to a tablet to a notebook, depending on their needs. It may be recalled that the original Padfone, though highly innovative, was not as popular as Asus possibly hoped. Its high price is considered by many to be the reason behind the lack of widespread adoption. The 4.3-inch smartphone of the original Padfone retailed for NT$17,990 or US$610. Meanwhile, the dockable tablet was priced at around $240 and the keyboard for $130. Thus, the complete package of first Padfone’s price reached around $980 in Taiwan. The Padfone 2’s price, therefore, would appear to be crucial for determining whether it will be successful this time.
As for its specifications, the Padfone 2 is expected to come with a 1.5Ghz Quad-Core Snapdragon S4 APQ8064 processor, 2GB of RAM, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It is said to have support for plenty of connectivity options, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, HSPA+, and 4G LTE. The device will be fuelled by a 2140 mAh battery and come with a 4.7-inch High Definition display with a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels. Its main camera will have a 13-megapixel sensor while its secondary camera will come with a 1.2-megapixel one.
