ADzero is a Bamboo-Cased Smartphone Heading for Kickstarter Funding, but it Packs a Quad-Core Processor

The ADzero Android smartphone concept was unveiled back in February but it wasn’t such a hit on the news despite being an odd, concept of a phone.  This bamboo (yes, real wood, not bamboo-like plastic) is now going to the kickstarter where the manufacturers expect to raise funds to actually build the phone.  The phone is described as an ultra-light-weight, super-elegant and organic phone made out of wood.  AD Creative, the brains behind the bamboo phone, seem serious about the phone which actually has a very impressive specs sheet.  I guess the concern with the wooden phone will not be performance but its durability.

The manufacturers have made a few changes here and there to the original phone concept but the main design and specs remain the same.  There are many wooden cases for different phone models in the market today but the idea of an actually wooden phone is entirely new, and this is what AD Creative are banking on to attract funders.  The phone sports a 4.5 inch screen with a display resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and has a 1.4 GHz quad-core Samsung Exynos processor and 1 GB RAM to boot.  Being a phone that has been in the works since February, it is no surprise that if it actually materializes it will come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich off-the-box and not Jelly bean.

Being a wooden phone, I am sure most people would be more concerned about its build and weight.  The phone will be just 11.8 mm thick but the final weight has not been made public yet.  Since wood is much heavier than plastic, I understand the manufacturer’s reluctance to reveal how heavy the phone will actually be.  Other major specs include an 8 megapixels rear camera, a not-so-impressive 0.3 megapixels front camera, WiFi, 35 UMTS and HSPA+ connectivity and a 2,050 mAh battery.

It is also worth pointing out that other than the impressive hardware specifications, the phone’s software maybe a major selling point too.  Although it comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the phone has an optional ADAOS Open Bootloader operating system.  For all these, and considering that the phone is made of wood which is obviously more expensive to acquire and craft into a phone, supporters will get it for $700 which to me is a steal.  Early supporters will get it for just $500, $200 off!

What do you think about this bamboo phone.  Would you buy it if all the specs come as listed and the build quality is durable?  This phone is set to hit Kickstarter ‘in a matter of weeks’ according to AD Creative.  We will update you when there is a new development.
