The South Korean mobile phone manufacturer, Pantech, is getting ready to unleash its foray into the high-end market. Pantech Vega R3 will soon compete head-to-head with Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note II and LG Optimus Vu as it will come packed with hardware bearing high specifications. It could also be considered a smartphone-tablet hybrid as it features 5.3 inches screen, and will run Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich upon release.
Hardware. It’s just been confirmed that Pantech Vega R3 will sport Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 MDP/T chipset, a quad-core Krait clocked at 1.5GHz and can be overclocked up to 1.7GHz depending on the firmware used. The thing about high-powered Qualcomm chipsets is that they also come with better graphics processor, thus, Adreno 320 GPU is integrated into this unit to provide Vega R3 top-notch display quality. Other devices that feature this Krait are Oppo Find 5, Asus Padfone 2, and Xiaomi MI-2.
Memory. Pantech confirmed that Vega R3 will come with more than enough 2GB RAM to complement its superfast processor. There are only a few smartphones or tablets packed with this much RAM and Galaxy Note II is an obvious competitor in this aspect. There are conflicting reports about the internal memory of this device; some say it has 16GB ROM others say it’s 32GB. One thing is for sure, though, there will be a microSD slot to support up to 32GB external memory.
Display. Adreno 320 GPU basically supports up to 1080p screen resolution but Pantech settles for 720p for this device. Nevertheless, Vega R3 will be one of the few devices available in the market today with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution. It also sports Natural IPS Pro LCD technology that offers a “naturally colored, bright and clear image.” This is, perhaps, a display technology that could stand in competition with Samsung’s Super AMOLED display. The advantage is that LCD eats up less power than LED.
Connectivity. Pantech Vega R3 supports Near Field Communication (NFC) and 4th Generation Long-Term Evolution (4G LTE) making it ahead of other devices. iPhone 5 supports LTE but not NFC; Galaxy S3 supports both but will have to downgrade to dual-core in the U.S. Aside from NFC and LTE, Vega R3 also supports Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi a/b/g/n. Needless to say, it supports everything needed to get its owners connected most of the times.
Battery. This is where Pantech Vega R3 will gain momentum in the market as there are only a few smartphones that come with battery more than 2000mAh; Galaxy Note is one with 2500mAh. Pantech Vega R3, on the other hand, provides longer service with its 2600mAh. This massive battery will prove to provide more power to the device knowing it comes with an LCD technology, which is very economical in terms of power consumption.
Pantech Vega R3 will showcase Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich but the manufacturer promised an upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean shortly after the release. That said, the device will debut in South Korea on September 26 but there is no information about the pricing. But it is expected it will be offered in almost the same price range as Galaxy Note II and Samsung Galaxy S III.
