Japanese multinational corporation and digital camera maker Nikon recently announced Nikon Coolpix S800c Camera; an Android 2.3 Gingerbread-driven device specifically designed not just to capture good quality photos but also capable of doing basic Android functionalities. This point and shoot digital camera is the first Android-operated device from Nikon and while it could have been very tempting for the company to use Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the Tokyo-based corporation wants it to be more stable thus, giving it Gingerbread.
Nikon Coolpix S800c Specs
Processor. It uses Nikon-built EXPEED C2 processor which is designed specifically for newer Coolpix camera series. For now, there is no information as to the clockspeed but there is no way it will be a dual-core chip. Nikon Coolpix S800c, being Nikon’s first Android-based camera, could be the start of a revolution in the company’s core platform. If this device becomes successful in its category, we might be able to expect larger Nikon cameras which may also be running on Android OS.
Sensor. It will be sporting BSI-CMOS sensor type capable of snapping pictures as wide as 4608 x 3456 pixels or around 16 megapixels. There are quite a few Android devices that sport camera more than 10 megapixels but reviewers and photography-enthusiasts are often amazed by them. Considering Coolpix S800c was built for taking pictures specifically, it might just please Android owners and photographers alike.
OS. Nikon didn’t say why it wasn’t given an Android 4.0 OS but knowing the stability and flexibility of Gingerbread, we can almost be certain that the company wants to provide users superb experience without compromising usability. Android 2.3 is the most stable version of Google’s mobile OS and since there is a higher possibility that this camera will not sport a processor reaching 1GHz clockspeed, it is the best option.
Nikon Coolpix S800c Features
This new portable Coolpix device offers optical zoom as high as 10X five autofocus options; contrast detect, center, multi-area, face detection and tracking. It also offers 17 scene modes photographers can use to fit their portraits, namely;
- Back Light
- Black and White Copy
- Close Up
- Easy Panorama
- Fireworks Show
- Night Landscape
- Night Portrait
- Pet Portrait
With a sensor reaching up to 16 megapixels, videography is never a problem for the device. It is capable of recording videos with following resolutions: 1920 x 1080 (30 fps), 1280 x 720 (30 fps), 640 x 480 (30 fps).
Pricing and Availability
For its functionality and features, it is offered at a considerably higher price, $349.95. Photography enthusiasts, however, don’t often look at the price so Nikon may be just right in offering Nikon Coolpix S800c at 250-dollar range. There is no specific release date yet but it is expected to come in early September.
In a nutshell
Being an Android device, its specs might fail to impress anyone. But being a compact digital camera, it exceeds expectations. Android OS is a good catch here considering its popularity and functionality. If there is one thing Nikon has overlooked, it would be the internal memory that reaches only up to 1.7GB. Having a 16MP sensor means photos will have tremendous size and 2GB isn’t enough for both amateur and professional photographers, although an SD card slot is available.
Overall, Nikon Coolpix S800c Android-based compact camera has everything to please anybody who loves taking pictures.
