Galaxy S II i9100 gets Jelly Bean, unofficially

Google is always keen on releasing updates for its famous mobile operating system, Android, while on the other hand, manufacturers aren’t enthusiastic about rolling out updates for their already sold devices. Everyone wants to have their devices running the latest software build and waiting for official update might take forever, and that’s when developers step in.

Developers have done it again. A XDA-Developers named kalgecin has successfully ported Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean to Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100. Galaxy S II is a great phone 1 GB of RAM, a 10.8 cm (4.3 in) WVGA Super AMOLED Plus screen display and an 8-megapixel camera with flash and 1080p full high definition video recording. The whole package has a 1.2 GHz dual-core “Exynos” system on a chip (SoC) processor running the show.

Since the ROM is unofficial and in its initial stage, you will encounter a hand full of bugs, but if you don’t mind getting your hands dirty, below is a list of what’s working and what’s not.

Things which are working perfectly fine includes

• Boot
• Bluetooth (reconnects sometimes)
• GSM/Data

Things which aren’t working includes

• Sound
• WiFi
• 3G
• Camera
• H/W Accelerator
• ADB debugging doesn’t start automatically if switched on with cable plugged in

This ROM works only for the Exynos variant of the phone. According to kalgecin, by downloading the ROM, you agree the following:

1. You must know how to extract logcat
2. This rom may brick your device
3. If you need help, post logcat
4. Sometimes my rom or recovery didn’t boot, you should know how to reflash that using odin or heimdal

If you agree the above mentioned points by the developer, head over here and follow the instructions mentioned on the page. The current version is a bit buggy and we suggest you to wait for few more weeks so that things are sorted out, however, if you in an adventurous mood, go ahead. Owners of 1.5 GHz dual-core QualcommScorpion version of Galaxy S2 (GT-I9210) should head over here to get jelly bean on their phones.

  1. So…

    • Sound
    • WiFi
    • 3G
    • Camera

…absolutely does work. The hwcomposer is also working but the ‘project butter’ enhancements are not implemented as yet.
