Lenovo Brings LePhone S880 Smartphone to Rival with Galaxy Note

A new product from Lenovo called the LePhone S880 aims to provide some competition to the Samsung Galaxy Note, one of Samsung’s successful products last year. Like the Galaxy Note, this device is a phablet, or a hybrid of a phone and a tablet that merges the functionalities of both while maintaining a manageable size.

This device runs on a low-power single core processor from MediaTek clocked at 1 GHz, 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of storage capacity. Already, these specifications are enough to raise eyebrows from users since these are low compared to the standards set by many smartphone makers today. However, the display is an even bigger surprise as the LePhone S880 is packed with a 5-inch touchscreen display that has a resolution of only 800 x 480 pixels.

The large display will understandably entice some people, however, given the low resolution, this display will likely offer poor quality images which could defeat the purpose of having a large display. Of course, if all one needs the phablet for is to enhance productivity via some word processing or web browsing, then the LePhone S880 would still be a logical purchase.

The other specifications, however, are a little better. The device comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, for one, and ships with a 5 MP rear camera along with a 0.3 MP camera. There is also GPS support, two SIM card slots for GSM and WCDMA, and a 2,250 mAh battery. Meanwhile, its weight is 200 grams or 0.44 pounds and has almost the same thickness as the iPhone 4S at 9.9 mm or 0.39 inches. In China, the device has a price tag of 2,199 yuan or about $345.

The LePhone S880 may be packaged as an alternative to the Samsung Galaxy Note, but given its low specifications, it is curious how the device will ever be able to compete with the much more decent hardware that comes with the Galaxy Note. That said, there is little competition in the 5-inch phablet niche, so Lenovo could still attract some buyers for the LePhone S880.
