Apple wants to have ‘.apple’ domain

Having a good domain name is very important. If you are big business already or are becoming big now, it is very important that you have an online presence. This is because whatever a customer wants from you, he or she will first Google it to see if your website has it. And Google search is strongly connected to your domain names. So, it is important. Till now, the most common domains would end with .com, .org, .net, .biz, or other post fixes. But now, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers — ICANN — is allowing top level companies to have highly customized domain names, which also includes the company name itself.

For example, the Cupertino tech giant, Apple, can have the domain name which ends with ‘.apple.’ Now, it is “”, and Apple can change it to “”. Yes, you guessed it right. The company would have to pay a very hefly fees for this. But you would be surprised to know how many number of companies are ready to pay $185,000 to get such top level domain names for their website. The list includes Apple, Sony Corp, and American Express Co among many others.

Other examples of such domain would be .bank, .auto, .pizza, and others. But again, these become too generalized. So what is the plan behind this? Well, a company could bid for a top level domain name, buy it, and then license it to some other company for a higher price, thereby making more money. That is generally how it is done. But changing an already popular web site address would create a lot of confusion and getting used to for customers. People who are used to typing for years now will have to start typing or or something else from now on, which would take some getting used to time.

But the idea of having the brand name itself as a domain name is kind of great. What do you think? TUAW says “ICANN has opened the proposed top-level domains to public comment. It’s expected that it may take up to two years for ICANN to approve the first of the new suffixes.”
