Apple Hinted on Killing MacBook Pro Series

Apple is getting ready to discontinue the [easyazon-link asin=”B005CWJ1DI” locale=”us”]Apple MacBook Pro[/easyazon-link] with the 17-inch screen. In addition, it will also do away with the entire MacBook Pro series. Apart from the 17-inch model, Apple sells the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the 15-inch MacBook Pro laptops, as well. In place of this, the company will launch a new brand of MacBooks next year. This new series is predicted to arrive on the third quarter of this year.

This decision follows speculations bolstered by actual reports that the MacBook Pro with the largest size is not selling well in the market. In the first quarter of this year, it only comprised 1.7 percent of the Cupertino company’s notebook sales. Meanwhile, the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro laptops are still getting strong sales, accounting for 46.9% and 18.1% of the notebook sales, respectively.

The upcoming MacBook line is expected to have a 13-inch and 15-inch model, like in the former Pro line. These devices will have Haswell processors, which is the name of Intel’s next-generation chips, as well as Retina Displays, like the one found on the most recently released iPad tablet. Currently, Apple’s laptops are running on Intel’s Ivy Bridge Intel Core i7 chips. They are moreover equipped with 750 GB of storage, HD graphics via AMD Radeon HD 6770M, and 4 GB of RAM. Battery life, meanwhile, lasts for 7 hours.

Apart from the processor and the screen, Apple will upgrade the laptops’ general design, too, taking inspiration from the wedge-shaped profile of the MacBook Air, for which Apple recently received a patent, as well as some of the MacBook Pro’s strong features.

This new move will likely reduce the number of Apple notebook models available to just four. There will be one 11-inch MacBook Air, a 13-inch MacBook Air, alongside the new 13-inch Macbook and the 14-inch Macbook.

More details about these developments could be revealed during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference or WWDC 2012 this coming June 11 to 15.
