900,000+ Google Androids Activated Daily

We all know that the Android is growing at an amazing rate, but did you know that it is 900,000+ a day amazing?  Andy Rubin, the smartphone operating system development head at Google tweeted that Google activates in excess of 900,000 Android devices in a day.  He also rubbished rumors that have been doing rounds for days that he was ditching Google.

At the end of June last year, Google activated about 500,000 android devices every day and at the end of the February it activated about 850,000 devices every day.  These devices include smartphones, tablets and other handheld devices running Android operating systems this is a move widely seen as Google’s attempt to dim Apple’s big day ahead of the WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) later this week.

Google has dominated the smartphone and mobile device market for a few years now, outdoing its main rivals Apple’s iOS, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile and Windows Phone and BlackBerry.  Recent studies by IDC indicate that Android accounts for 82% of the smartphone market and have shipped over 90 million smartphones in the first quarter of 2012.  Of these, 45% were manufactured by Samsung.

It appears to me that the robust Chinese market is responsible for the recent success of the Android.  On average, a quarter of all Android devices shipped in the first quarter of 2012 are China-made.  The research by the IDC also showed that Android will dominate the market through 2017, a time when Google expect to dominate at least 48 percent of the smartphone and mobile devices center.  Android’s smartphone market share leaped from 17% in 2010 to 44% in 2011, a sign of good things to come in the second half of this year.

One area that Android has not yet beaten iOS is the mobile application development.  Slick, robust and consistent application development is a crucial element in the success of any mobile operating system.  A report by Flurry Analytics showed that for every ten applications that Android developers develop, there are 7 for iOS.  It may be just a matter of time before Android beats iOS in this area too then the stage will be set for the registration of a million devices every day.
