When Sprint merged with Nextel in December of 2004 they inherited Nextel’s sponsorship of Nascar’s championship stock car series the Nextel Cup. Nextel had just entered into that Sponsorship at the beginning of the 2004 season in February.
The original contract between Nextel and Nascar was a 10 year contract that would end in 2013. Earlier this year Sprint CEO Dan Hesse had said that they were in negotiations with Nascar to extend that partnership. Friday evening in Las Vegas at the 2011 Championship awards event it was announced that Sprint had signed on to be the title sponsor through the 2016 season.
More after the break
With the sponsorship Sprint is the signature sponsor of the stock car series and the 10 race playoffs dubbed the “Sprint Chase For The Cup”. Sprint is also the signature sponsor for the all star race held in Charlotte North Carolina and has a huge presence at every Nascar race track on race weekends with the Sprint Nascar Experience.
Sprint also has the official mobile app for Nascar as well as a Sprint ID which outfits Sprint customers with SprintID capable Android devices with themes, widgets and apps covering their favorite sport.
Hesse was present at the championship event Friday night in Las Vegas. Hesse spoke on their sponsorship, thanked the drivers for making it so exciting and presented this years chase winner Tony Stewart with a bonus check of $5.8 million dollars.
