Popular TV check in app Get Glue just got much bigger. Direct TV was looking to join the new wave of social cultural check ins, and more specifically tv/movie checkins. They picked Get Glue to build their Social TV app for them.
The Smart TV app works similarly to the way Get Glue already functions. Users of the app, in this case Direct TV customers, can use their Direct TV remote to check in to what they’re watching, and share it with their friends. If a friend posts something on Social TV that their friends like their friends can use their remotes to login and check out the new show from the beginning.
More after the break
“We’re giving the consumer the ability to share what they’re watching with their friends and really drive personal recommendations,” said Tony Goncalves, DirecTV’s senior vice president of product management told the Wall Street Journal . “Television is less and less about a time-based viewing, more about content: that search and discovery is really critical.”
Get Glue currently has 1.5 million users using their application. In August there were 11.7 million tv and movie check ins. Get Glue users sign into the app and then check into what they are watching. Users can than elect to share it with their Facebook or Twitter so their friends can see.
Get Glue was founded in October of 2009
