Toshiba Unveils 7″ Thrive

Some exciting news came out of a Toshiba event in New York City Tuesday evening, Toshiba has unveiled a 7″ version of the Toshiba Thrive.  If you’ve been a TDG reader long than you know that the Toshiba Thrive is my daily driver. I’m a big believer in productivity via mobile and the Toshiba Thrive, to date, does productivity the best.  Although we lose some of the productivity in the 7″ model it’s a great move for Toshiba.

Toshiba’s 7″ Thrive tablet features an LED backlit AutoBrite display with 1280×800 resolution. It also includes Toshiba’s Adaptive Display and Resolution+ video enhancement technology which gives images and videos on the Toshiba Thrive’s 7″ screen brilliant, crisp and popping images.

The 7″ version packs the same 1ghz dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor as it’s big 10 inch brother. This of course gives the 7″ tablet extremely fast and accurate performance no matter what you’re doing. It’s coming with Android 3.2 out of the gate.

In the camera department you’ve got two HD cameras, a 5 megapixel on the back and a 2 megapixel on the front.

Although neither Thrive model is marketed as “rugged’ the 7″ model has the same easy grip backing as the 10″ version which makes it comfortable in the hand and easy to grip and hold onto. This is actually one of the features we love about the 10″ Thrive.

The 7″ Thrive loses a bit in terms of productivity from the 10″ version. You trade in a full size HDMI port, USB port and full size SD card slot for a microUSB port, microHDMI port and microSD slot. Which makes it have the same connectivity options as some of the better connected 10 inch tablets on the market.

Toshiba’s file manager is on board, which regular readers of TDG know we absolutely love. The Toshiba file manager has the look, feel and features of a regular computer file manager making it easy to connect, copy, delete and paste files from multiple sources.

There’s no word on pricing yet. The Toshiba teaser site says it will be ready in November while the press release we received said December. Either way it should be here for the holidays and at 7” it’s a stocking stuffer!
