With the upcoming Mango OS that we will see later this year from Windows, will come with an Android type marketplace for consumers. The web based store will give Window’s users the ability to discover new applications for their devices, while it will give developers added visibility along with increased merchandising possibilities. An another added bonus to this new web store will also have a social type element for uers to discover new applications quicker and easier.
According to Todd Brix, Senior Director for Windows Marketplace:
“Web Marketplace will also enable customers (and you) to promote your apps among friends, family, partners and social networks. Customers will be able to share their favorite apps via email with a link to the app, embed a link in articles or make a recommendation through Facebook or Twitter; each in just a single click.”
Microsoft also has plans to add their Bing search engine into their new web store, and in turn applications that users have purchased will appear in their search engine along with inside the history. Consumers will be able to easily browse and find applications easily using Bing’s visual search.
As fare as billing goes, the downloaded application will be billed to the user’s credit card that they have linked to their existing Windows Live ID. The application will then be sent via email or SMS where it then can be downloaded on to the device. Microsoft has stated that the web store will be able to maintain a record of the customer’s download and payment history to make it easier to reinstall applications in the future.
“With the new Web version of Marketplace, we can provide your app with extra visibility, more merchandising possibilities, new end user features that promote app sales and a simplified application purchase experience,” Brix said.
Google had made a similar move back in February when they introduced a web version of the Android Marketplace. However, unlike the Windows Phone 7 web store, the web version of the Android Market lets consumers download an application straight to their Android device very easily.
Microsoft has been struggling for quite some time to get its smartphone operating system off the ground and into the hands of more users. By taking on some Android type concepts could help them do this. At the moment Android has 36% of the shares while Microsoft is falling behind quickly. It will be truly ineresting to see how they do now with their new web store.
