Android “I” Is For Ice Cream Sandwich: Google IO 2011 Coverage #Googleio #io2011

San Francisco, CA- This morning at Google IO during the main keynote address, it was announced that the next version of Android will officially be called “Ice Cream Sandwich”. If you remember back to Mobile World Congress, former Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, revealed that the next version of Android would merge Honeycomb with Gingerbread and carry the letter I.

Last year Google committed to spacing out the full new version releases of Android a little further apart than they were. Ice Cream Sandwich isn’t expected until Q4 2011 which give the engineers on the Android team plenty of time to tweak the new hybrid features for Ice Cream Sandwich.  They didn’t dive into what to expect other than to say the action bar would be there.

More after the break

We are also expecting fragmenting and the multi task icon that’s available on Honeycomb.  Just prior to announcing Ice Cream Sandwich, it was announced that Verizon Wireless Motorola Xoom owners would see an upgrade to Android 3.1, an update to Honeycomb. In that update one of the highlights was scrollable widgets. We expect scrollable widgets to be a part of Ice Cream Sandwich.

There was more great Android news this morning. That news included Android at home, a new accessory developer kit and of course movies and music.  We also hope that all these new Android products will find a home in Android Ice Cream Sandwich.
