As we prepare to embark on Austin Texas this weekend for South By Southwest, SXSW or those too foo foo for that, South- By, we are embarking on the worlds biggest app birthday party, and they’ve brought the present.
Foursquare launched at SXSW two years ago, when Dennis and Naveen put together their nifty little app and set off to SXSW they had no idea that it would grow to the size it has. In Dennis Crowley’s words they told people at SXSW of their idea to turn “life into a game”. (consequently there is an Android twitterer out there who also launched at SXSW but that’s another story)
So Foursquare is three and Foursquare is working with a new idea that Crowley calls “Every Check In Counts” in keeping with this theme the upgrades with Foursquare 3.0 include:
An Explore tab and a me tab which tells you where you and your friends go the most
A revamped leaderboard system
Group and Single deals

Crowley suggests that Foursquare has outgrown the “Mayorship” model. As Foursquare grows it’s harder to get a Mayorship and then even harder to regain that Mayorship. Businesses have been using Mayors to offer special discounts and promotions. In the coming weeks Foursquare is revamping their business offers to new categories: swarms, groups of friends, newbies, regulars, mayors and everyone. Businesses can customize specials to how you fit into that scheme and you can benefit in different ways then you have before.
So check for the upgrade now and start checking in.
