According to the IDC Android and Windows phones will remain superior for quite some time.
According to the market researcher, over 450 million smartphones will ship in the year 2011, which is up from the 300 million that shipped the previous year.
IDC is predicting that in 2011 Android will account for around 39.5 % of all smartphone shipments this year and easily beating Symbian’s 20.9% market share. Apple’s iOS platform is expected to be running on 15.7 % of the smartphones shipped in 2011. While RIM’s market share will be around 14.9% and Window’s share will be 5.5%.
The research firm also believes that Android will have 45.4% market share in 2015. That will be followed by Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform with 20.9% market share. While Apple’s iOS will be 15.3% and RIM’s BlackBerry platform will own 13.7 % of the smartphone market.
Microsoft’s expected gains in the smartphone market are due to their recent partnership with Nokia, which will be using Windows Phone 7 as the main operating system in its smartphones possible starting in 2012.
