A Non Verizon Sony Xperia Play Has Passed Through The FCC

Wait hold on a minute! Sony Ericsson clearly said that Verizon Wireless was going to be the first US carrier for the Sony Xperia Play (PlayStation phone) released at MWC last month. Sony Ericsson’s CEO Bert Nordberg even confirmed it in post event interviews.  We even saw a leaked Wirefly page with the Verizon Xperia Play on it (which was taken down quickly)

Well today the graphic above, along with pieces of the instruction manual, made their way through FCC approval. The peculiar thing is that the device seeking FCC approval was the one sporting UMTS (900/2100mhz) frequencies which are a far cry from the CDMA technology that Verizon Wireless uses.  Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE runs entirely on 700mhz frequencies so it’s not headed for Verizon’s 4G LTE either.

There has to be some explanation as to why the UMTS version went through the FCC and hopefully that answer is forthcoming.
