Text messaging is huge. Hundreds of thousands of texts are sent daily by Android phones through many different messaging apps. Many of the Android messaging apps differ in their own ways, and sometimes I prefer to have some more features with my messaging app. This is why I use Handcent SMS. I have never used a messaging app with this amount of customization and functionality and that is why I have chosen Handcent SMS as this week’s App of the Week.
The first thing you will notice about Handcent is the way they allow you to make it personal. You can set it to have a bubble style, bar style, and others. After you choose that you can pick the color of the bubbles (or whatever other style you chose). They really let you create any color. You start with red, blue, and green and can drag the bars to make anything you want. Another huge customization feature is letting you set a background for your message threads. This can be colors, pictures, etc. You can also set the different notification sounds and such directly from the app, meaning you can choose little bits of music and media for a ringtone. You can also customize the notification bar logo for incoming messages. This is cool because you can pick different looks and colors to suit you. There are other customization features in the app, so many in fact, that I can’t mention them all and still make this a fairly quick read. This app has some awesome features.
Another great thing about Handcent is functionality. Obviously, this app is a messaging application, so it better get that right, and it does. Everything you would expect a messaging app to do it does. Blacklist, group messaging, threaded messages, they’re all there. However, one great feature not included in many stock apps is popup. This feature is awesome for those constantly texting who do not want to miss their messages. Every time you get a message you get a little pop up menu that allows you to reply, hide, or delete it. You can still do speech to text and you have full auto-correct capabilities. This feature is awesome and extremely useful. It is something that can put Handcent above most messaging apps, and can be enough for users to download it and give it a try.
Handcent is definitely my favorite SMS app. I love it and use it every day. I highly recommend it whether you text all day or just occasionally. Also it’s free, so give it a try. It is an awesome app and that is why I have chosen to make it this week’s App of the Week.
