How To Fix Xbox One Won’t Update | System Update Won’t Install

It’s highly recommended that your Xbox One runs the latest software version all the time. However, there may be some Xbox One consoles that may encounter an error and won’t install an update at all. If you’re one of the unlucky gamers with this problem, learn what you can do about it in this guide.

Reasons why your Xbox One won’t update

There are a number of causes why an Xbox One may encounter system software issues. We discuss the common reasons for the problem below.

Internet connection issue.

Weak or intermittent internet connection can cause update issues. Try to check for any current issues with your home network to see if there’s any possibility that the issue may be coming from there.

Depending on the situation, you may have to focus your troubleshooting on fixing your home network issue first. If you’re using wifi to play online, try to check for possible Xbox One wifi issue.

Update server issue.

From time to time, Microsoft’s servers may encounter problems and may be unable to allow updates. If this happens, your console will usually indicate the problem with an error after the update has failed.

Gamertag or profile bug.

In some few cases, a bug with the current gamer profile may prevent installation of an update. Although it’s not widespread, some users were able to trace the reason for the failure to update to a corrupted profile. To see if this is the one causing your problem, you can try to redownload your profile as part of your troubleshooting steps.

Corrupted System Cache.

The Xbox One console uses a set of temporary set of files called system cache in order to load games and apps quickly. Sometimes, this cache may get corrupted and cause problems. You can clear the Xbox One cache to see if your console won’t update.

Third party software modification.

Modified Xbox One consoles may not be able to install updates. If the software of your console has been tampered with, official Xbox Live updates may be blocked. We recommend that you revert the software to its official state in order to update again.
