How To Fix Google Pixel 3 Stops Playing Music When Screen Locks

Problem: Hello, I have 3 droids for work testing; an LG G7, a Google Pixel 3 and an Nokia 7... The Lg G5 is running Android 8.0 Everything I am about to tell you is NOT an issue running version 8 or below. Ok…. Both newer phones (Pixel & Nokia), immediately upgraded to Android 9.0 Running Android 9.0 (Pie) is stopping music from playing via my phone or the SD card… whenever the phone locks. Example: If I set the display for 2 mins… I get 2 minutes of music playing… the screen goes to sleep… and 1 minute later the music stops. The timestamp on the music is 00:00. If I go back… then forth… the timestamp shows the proper song length and music plays…. until the sleep/hibernate/lock happens If I set the screen display to 5 minutes… same thing but longer musical playing. 5 minutes of music and display… screen goes dark…. 1 minute later music stops playing. This happens regardless of what settings I use or tweak on the phone. I am pretty Tech Savvy being a Computer programmer for 22 years. And I am really good with droids. But I am officially stumped here. How could Android do this? Is there something I am missing? I have seen numerous threads on other forums about this but most are from streaming… and/or Wi-Fi interruptions. Only 1 post addresses the issue of music stopping even when not streaming such as in my case. It has not been solved. My music is either on my SD card or my internal phone memory… and this happens constantly. Note: I even purchased the Nokia just to test Android 9 stopping music, as I wanted to be sure it was not just something with the Google Pixel 3. Well…. It’s Android 9.0 – Pie… Killing Music when the phone goes to sleep/hibernates/locks. Help!

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on the phone its best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

Since this issue is happening on different phone models that have upgraded to Android 9.0 then it’s very likely that this is caused by a bug in the new software which should be fixed by a future update. There are however several troubleshooting steps that you can perform to check if this is an issue with the phone itself.

Turn off battery saver mode

The battery saver mode feature of this phone helps extend the battery life of the device. When this is activated the phone will:

  • Wait until you look at an app to refresh its content, like email or news
  • Stop use of Location services when your screen is off
  • Stop apps from doing things in the background, unless you turn off battery optimization

Try to turn off this feature to check if it is what’s causing the problem.

  • From a Home screen, touch and swipe up to display all apps.
  • Go to Settings – Battery Battery icon.
  • Tap Battery saver.
  • Tap the Turn off switch

Perform a Soft Reset

Sometimes this issue can be caused by a minor software glitch which can be fixed by refreshing the phone software. A soft reset must be performed in this case. This is done by pressing and holding the Power button for approximately 10 seconds or until the device power cycles.

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

There are instances when an app you downloaded can cause this problem. To verify if this is the case you will need to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • From the home screen, press and hold the Power key.
  • Release the Power key, then tap and hold Power off.
  • Read the Reboot to safe mode message and tap OK.
  • The device will power off and restart in safe mode.

If the problem does not occur in this mode then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. This will revert the phone back to its original factory condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this step.

  • Hold the Power Button Until the Phone Is Off
  • Hold the Power Button and the Volume Down Button for a Few Seconds
  • Wait to See Fastboot Mode on the Screen
  • Let Go of the Buttons
  • Select Recovery Mode
  • Wait for the Android Robot Image to Pop Up
  • Hold Down the Power Button and Then Press the Volume Up Button
  • Select Wipe Data/Factory Reset
  • Select Yes
  • Select Reboot System Now

In case the issue still persists even after a factory reset then the best thing to do right now is to wait for a future software update that will fix this issue.
