Troubleshooting Google Pixel that can no longer connect to Home Wi-Fi

Connecting to the internet through Wi-Fi is cheaper and more convenient than using mobile data depending on the area you’re in. If you don’t have Wi-Fi at home, then your company probably has or you can just go to Starbucks and connect to its hotspot for free. The point is majority of smartphone owners prefer to use Wi-Fi than mobile data but what would you do if your phone could no longer connect to a network it used to connect before? Well, here’s our recommendation:

Step 1: Reboot your Google Pixel

It’s a no-brainer. If the problem occurs for the first time without any apparent reason or cause, then just reboot your phone as some of the services may have just crashed and affected some of the most basic functions and services including Wi-Fi. Don’t do anything without rebooting your device.

Step 2: Powercycle your network devices

It’s possible that your network devices such as your modem and/or router aren’t working well and need to be refreshed. So, after rebooting your phone a couple of times and the problem remained, it’s time you rebooted your network devices. Unplug and leave them without power for a minute and then turn them back on.

If, however, the problem isn’t fixed by rebooting both your phone and your network devices, then we might be looking at a possible firmware issue.

Step 3: Try connecting your Google Pixel while in safe mode

Sometimes apps may cause problems like this, so before we proceed with our troubleshooting, we need to rule out this possibility. To do that, just boot your phone in safe mode and try to connect your phone to Wi-Fi again. Here’s how you boot your Pixel in safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power button until the Google logo appears on screen then release. Allow several seconds for the logo to appear.
  2. With Google logo still on screen, press and hold the Volume down button.
  3. Continue to hold the Volume down button until “Safe mode” appears in the lower-left of the unlock screen then release. This may take up to 30 seconds.

Once the phone entered safe mode, try to connect to the same Wi-fi network and see if goes through, if not, then the next steps might help.

Step 4: Connect to other Wi-Fi network

This is not a solution but it will give us an idea where the problem lies. If your phone can connect to other Wi-Fi network without any issues, then the problem is with your network, otherwise, it’w with your phone.

If the problem is with your network, then call your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and have the tech check your connection, otherwise, you need to reset your device.

Step 5: Reset your Google Pixel

You have no other choice but to reset your device should the problem continue to bug you after doing all the steps above but before that, make sure you backup all your data and files as they’ll all be deleted. Here’s how you reset your phone:

  1. If your device is on, turn it off.
  2. Press and hold the Volume down button. While holding Volume down, press and hold the
  3. Power button until the phone turns on. You’ll see the word “Start” with an arrow around it.
  4. Press the Volume down button until you highlight “Recovery mode.”
  5. Press the Power button to start recovery mode. You’ll see an image of an Android robot with an exclamation mark (you may also see “No command”).
  6. Press and hold the Power button. While holding Power, press the Volume up button once. Then release the Power button.
  7. If “Wipe data/factory reset” isn’t highlighted, press the Volume down button until it is. Then press the Power button to select it.
  8. Press the Volume down button until you highlight “Yes” (or “Yes – delete all user data”). Then press the Power button to select it.
  9. After the reset is complete, press the Power button to select “Reboot system now.”
  10. When you’re done, restore your data.

Of course, if the problem continues after this, then send your phone for repair as it might be a hardware problem.

Google Pixel saves connection instead of connecting

Question: My Google cannot successfully to connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot as it just says the network is “Saved” but not “Connected” like it used to. What seems to be the problem?

Answer: This kind of problem is often related to the network login credentials. The password you used may be incorrect. You may also be seeing your phone trying to acquire and IP address but fails to establish a connection. In this case, this is what I suggest you do:

  • Verify that your login credentials are correct.
  • Delete or forget the network you’re trying to connect to as it might be just some kind of a glitch in the system due to corrupt caches or files.
  • Factory reset your phone if everything else fails.

Here’s how you factory reset your Google Pixel:

  1. Open your device’s Settings app.
  2. Under “Personal,” tap Backup & reset.
  3. Tap Factory data reset and then Reset phone or Reset tablet.
  4. If you have a screen lock, you’ll need to enter your pattern, PIN, or password.
  5. When prompted, tap Erase everything to erase all data from your device’s internal storage.
  6. When your device has finished erasing, select the option to reboot your device.
  7. When you’re done, restore your data. Learn how to restore your data on a Pixel phone.

Google Pixel is connected to a Wi-Fi network but doesn’t have connectivity

Question: I have a Pixel phone and I’m actually enjoying it. It’s beautiful and fast. However, I have a slight problem with the Wi-Fi. I am connected to my home network but I don’t have internet connection. What do I need to do?

Answer: Just because the phone is connected to Wi-Fi doesn’t mean it has connectivity. Try to use your other devices that are connected to the same network. If they have internet connection, then the problem might be with your phone, otherwise, it’s an issue with your Wi-Fi network. Just try to follow the troubleshooting procedure above, you can determine the problem right away and do what is necessary to fix it.

Google Pixel shuts down or reboots while connecting to Wi-Fi

Question: It just started. Every time I try to connect to a Wi-Fi, my phone reboots or shuts down completely. Is this some kind of a virus or something? I have a Google Pixel by the way.

Answer: This is more of a firmware-related issue but I don’t think it’s some kind of a virus that’s causing this, I even think it’s just some corrupt cache or data that’s causing it. I suggest you reset your phone to bring it back to its original settings and a configuration that works.

Google Pixel freezing while browsing using Wi-Fi

Question: There’s a problem with my phone and I don’t know what it is. But more often than not, it freezes when I’m connected to Wi-Fi and browsing through the web or just doing some usual chores. When I’m connected through mobile data, however, the phone works perfectly fine without the freezes. So, it’s Wi-Fi that’s messing up my phone. Can this be fixed?

Answer: First off, we don’t know for sure if it’s really Wi-Fi that’s causing the problem or not. The phone has to be closely and properly observed to know or determine what the cause of the problem is. But I suggest, just before you hand over your phone to a tech, you do the master reset. Of course you need to backup your data before doing that.

Question: Yesterday, I tried to connect to a publish Wi-Fi hotspot but my phone became unresponsive after that. Tried again but the same thing happened. Is there a problem with my phone? What can I do to fix it? Thanks.

  1. For me the issue ended up being outdated encryption method. Changing the router from WEP to WPA2 fixed the issue immediately.

  2. I’ve had two Pixels fail to function with WiFi after OS upgrades. Seems to be software-related, but Google’s only answer is to send it in for warranty replacement, if the phone is still under warranty, which one was not.

This is frankly unacceptable for a phone with this price point. A $550 phone shouldn’t become a papwerweight after a year of normal use. I’m very disappointed with Google.

  3. I have the same issue since March 2017, got a replacement phone and it has the exact same issue. 🙁 If anyone has a solution please share, i don’t want to go through the whole replacement process again, it was painful.

  4. Same issue here. Cannot connect to any 2ghz network after update last week. 5ghz works fine… Is there a fix for this?

  5. Mine is connecting then reverting to saved, very frustrating – Started to happen after a major update last week.

  6. Loved mine until last weekend too. Went from not being able to connect to found wifi networks to now not even finding any networks. Other devices connecting seamlessly. Have tried clearing caches etc. and even full factory reset. Nothing worked. Costing me heaps in mobile data. Not good enough for an expensive phone. Going to try and return and go back to HTC.

  7. Loved my Google Pixel until this weekend as it just wont connect to any WiFi networks. It will save them and all but, just not connect once you selecting which network you want. It says connecting then doesn’t and goes back to displaying saved.

    What can I do?
