How To Fix Borderlands 3 Multiplayer Won’t Connect | Xbox One

Borderlands 3 connection issues are mostly related to its multiplayer mode. If you’re having a hard time connecting to this game’s multiplayer, this article should be able to help.

Causes of Borderlands 3 multiplayer connection issues

Below are the common causes for Borderland 3 connection problems.

Xbox Live server issue.

Majority of connection problems with Borderlands 3 are caused by server-side problems. Outages, planned or unplanned maintenance, and unanticipated issues outside your local network can happen from time to time.

If you are having an issue with Borderlands 3 multiplayer, the first thing that you want to check is the status of the game servers. You can do that by going to Microsoft’s official Xbox Live status page.

Local network equipment glitch.

In other cases, the root of your Borderlands 3 problem may lie with your internet connection at home. You’ll have to consider troubleshooting your local network if your Xbox One is unable to connect to the internet, if all games are unable to connect to multiplayer, or if other devices can’t go online either.

Low bandwidth.

Slow connection issue can sometimes be the reason that an Xbox One may experience timeouts when trying to connect to a game server. If there are other devices hogging your internet bandwidth at home, your Xbox One console may not have enough to let you play online.

NAT problems.

If it’s your first time to play Borderlands 3 and the multiplayer mode won’t connect, it may be caused by a NAT problem.

NAT stands for Network Address Translation. It is a process in a network that assigns a device like your Xbox One or computer a public IP address. In a home setting, this under-the-hood process is performed by your router and usually doesn’t need recalibration by a user.

However, if you’re gaming and you have trouble joining parties or multiplayer games, this might mean that your NAT is set up differently. You may need to check for possible NAT issues if you’re positive that none of the previously mentioned factors are not causing the issue at all.

Limited Xbox Live account.

There are a couple of things to note if it’s your first time to play Borderlands 3 on Xbox. First, you need a premium Xbox Live account to play online. If you haven’t paid for Xbox Live Gold membership, then this might be the reason why Borderlands 3 multiplayer is not working.

Second, your Xbox Live account or gamertag may not be configured properly in order to allow you play online. This usually happens if you are using a child or teen account. If you have either of these accounts, you’ll need to sign in using the parent account first so that restrictions can be changed.

Fixing Borderlands 3 multiplayer won’t connect issue

These are the possible solutions to fix Borderlands 3 multiplayer connection problems on Xbox One:

  1. Check Xbox Live server status.

Visit the official Xbox Live server status page and check if there are any on-going server problems.Xbox Live server status

  2. Troubleshoot your local network devices.

If your home network is having connection issues at the moment, this can be the reason why you are unable to play multiplayer games on Borderlands 3.
The first thing that you want to do is check whether or not your internet is working. If you have other devices at home, try to check if they are able to connect to the internet.
The next good thing to do is to check if you have slow internet connection issue. On your computer, try doing a speed test to see if you’re getting the speed you’re paying for. If the speed is slow, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and ask for assistance.
Then, finally, make sure that you power cycle your network equipment like modem, router, and your Xbox One console. Just turn the devices off for about 30 seconds to refresh the connection and try connecting to multiplayer again.Xbox One S Power button

  3. Check for internet speed and low bandwidth on your console.

If your local home network is working and internet appears to be working normally, you should then check if you only have an issue with your Xbox One. To do that, you need to conduct a network connection test.
This is how you perform a network test:
-Press the Xbox button  to open the guide.
    -Select System.
    -Select Settings.
    -Go to General.
    -Select Network settings.
    -Select Test multiplayer connection.
In order for your Xbox One to play online without issues, you want to make sure that you have at least 3Mbps connection speed on the console. Anything slower than that can run the risk of disconnection when playing online.Test network connection

  4. Confirm your Xbox One NAT is Open.

To fix any possible NAT-related problem, you need to check your Xbox’s NAT type first. Here’s how to do that:
-Press the Xbox button  to open the guide.
    -Select System.
    -Select Settings.
    -Select General.
    -Select Network settings.
-Under Current Network Status, the NAT Type field displays your current NAT type.
If the NAT type does not say Open, which means it may be Moderate or Strict, you’ll have to troubleshoot your router to change some settings. Some of the router troubleshooting steps that you might need includes turning on UPnP, upgrading the firmware, opening network ports (port forwarding), enabling DMZ, or a  factory reset. Exact steps on how to do any of these steps depends on your equipment. Make sure to contact your Internet Service Provider if you don’t have any idea how to perform these tasks.NAT type

  5. Check if correct ports are opened.

Home networks with ISP provided routers don’t usually need to change port setup but if you are connecting to the internet using another network like that of a hotel, school, office, or other shared network, the network’s security software or firewall may be configured to block certain ports used by your Xbox to play online. Talk to the network administrator to see if they can open the required ports for you (also known as port forwarding).
These are the ports that you need to be opened:
    TCP: 3074
    UDP: 88,500,3074,3544,4500

  6. Check your Xbox Live account restrictions (privacy and safety settings).

By default, Xbox Live accounts that are not considered child or teen accounts can go online without problems. If you have a child or teen account, you’ll need to the parent account to change your privacy and safety settings so you can play online multiplayer.
To check if your account, you can go to Xbox.com and sign in using your Microsoft account (the email for your Xbox Live account). Then, go to Privacy & online safety tab and set the correct settings in order to interact with other people. To allow your profile to join multiplayer games, go to the Xbox One/ Windows 10 Online Safety tab and make sure that you allow Join multiplayer games and You can create and join clubs.Xbox Live account settings

Connect your Xbox One by wire.

In some cases, Borderlands 3 multiplayer connection problems are fixed by having an Xbox One directly connected to the modem or router by wire. Make sure to try this workaround if none of the solutions above has helped.
