Accessory Spotlight: Recharge Your Samsung Galaxy Tab In The Car

February 4th, 2012

Shortly after the release of the original 7″ Samsung Galaxy Tab I found myself camped out like an Apple Fan Boy at Toys R Us on Thanksgiving night. It was cold, wet and rainy but luckily I had an umbrella that worked great, a case on my Galaxy Tab and I was going to watch a movie or something to stay entertained. That’s when I quickly learned that not all 30 pin connectors are created equally.

I showed up in the line with about 50% to go on the Galaxy Tab. I thought I was lucky because I had a fully charged Amzer solar charger so if my tab went down I could just plug it in to the solar chargers USB port and voila.  No dice.  I got a red X over the battery charging indicator and the Galaxy Tab quickly died after that.

LG Introduces First LTE Tablet

January 17th, 2012

We’re not sure why LG didn’t unveil this tablet last week at CES however on Tuesday LG announced their first LTE tablet.  Not only is this LG’s first LTE tablet according to LG it’s the first LTE tablet in Korea, where it will debut.

The new Optimus Pad LTE will feature an 8.9 inch 1280×768 “True HD” IPS Display. Under the hood we’re looking at a dual core 1.5ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. There is an 8 mega pixel camera in the back and a 2 mega pixel camera in the front to handle video chatting over 3G, 4G or wifi.

There is no mention of Ice Cream Sandwich. The tablet is expected to debut with Android 3.2 Honeycomb. There is also no mention of 3D which was a big thing for LG last year with the original Optimus Pad that came out in the United States on T-Mobile as the “T-Mobile G-Slate”. The reception of the LG tablet with “Google” was warm at best.

The World’s Thinnest Android Tablet Coming From Toshiba At CES?

January 6th, 2012

According to reports on engadget and phone arena, Toshiba is about to unveil the thinnest Android tablet in the world. Toshiba introduced the 10.1″ Toshiba Thrive tablet over the summer. We first got to see it at CE Week in New York City. The Toshiba Thrive is a little on the big and bulky side but that’s because it comes with great business features like a user replaceable battery, full sized SD card slot and a full sized USB slot.

Toshiba followed up the Thrive 10.1 with a new Thrive 7. It trims down the size and the weight with a smaller screen and more standardized ports.

Toshiba also released the Excite tablet at IFA this year which as you can see from this story, is much thinner than the Thrive.

Asus Expected To Launch 7″ Tablet At CES 2012

January 2nd, 2012

While we are rounding out our CES 2012 schedule and checking all the rumors we’ve stumbled across the latest tablet rumor. Asus is believed to be introducing a new 7″ tablet reportedly being called the Eee Pad MeMo.

The 7″ tablet will join the ranks of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0, Acer Iconia A100, and the Toshiba Thrive 7″.  While it doesn’t spec out quite as nicely as the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime, we are expecting it to have a 1.2 ghz dual core Qualcomm SnapDragon processor and a 1280×800 display. We’ve also heard it was sport dual cameras with a 5 megapixel on the rear and a 1.3 megapixel on the front.

There’s no word on pricing but we are anticipating a shift in 7″ tablet pricing after the wild success of the Amazon Kindle Fire. Expect the MeMo (mee-mo not memo) tablet to come in the $200-$300 range and hopefully the latter.

$120 Ice Cream Sandwich Android Tablet Available In The United States

December 25th, 2011

The first Ice Cream Sandwich powered tablet available in the United States was unfortunately not the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime, it’s not made by Acer, Toshiba, Samsung or Motorola. Nope, the first Ice Cream Sandwich tablet available in the United States is the Ainovo Novo7.

The Novo7 is a 7 inch Android tablet powered by a single core 1ghz MIPS based xburst CPU. It has a Vivante GC860 GPU clocked at 444mhz. In the camera department you’re looking at 2 mega pixels on the rear and a VGA camera on the front.

Obviously we aren’t looking at anything that great as far as hardware. The software changes everything. The tablet is running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Now keep in mind the tablet specs aren’t very good you could also be looking at a device that doesn’t come with Gapps or Android market on board.

Review: Our Favorite Android Tablet So Far The Lenovo Thinkpad

November 30th, 2011

The Lenovo Thinkpad is our favorite Android Honeycomb tablet to date. Prior to using the Lenovo Thinkpad most everyone who follows thedroidguy knows our favorite tablet was the Toshiba Thrive. We like both tablets because they are kings of productivity when it comes to tablets. Now there are a lot of tablet owners who prefer to use their tablet for entertainment. In the entertainment category the Samsung Galaxy Tab series is far and away the best for entertainment but if you’re looking for a real business tool this is it.

The Lenovo Thinkpad comes out of the box with similar specs to many of the Android Honeycomb tablets released this year. It’s running on an Nvidia Tegra 2 1ghz dual core processor complimented by 1gb of RAM. The display is a very sharp 10.1″ IPS display with a resolution of 1280 x 800.  It also comes in three versions 16gb, 32gb and 64gb of on board storage.

Acer A200 Outed In Promo Video

November 29th, 2011

It’s not a big secret that Acer is working on a follow up to their successful A500 tablet. Their newest tablet the A200 has already shown up at the FCC’s Columbia Maryland test center along with getting BlueTooth certification.

Now Acer has outed the A200 tablet in their own promotional video. The A200 is sporting an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, and 1gb of RAM so it’s not going to be competing with the likes of the Asus Transformer Prime the way it’s predecessor directly competed with the original Eee Pad Transformer tablet.

Acer’s promotional video makes mention of the full sized USB port, microSD slot and the ability to share via Acer ClearFi.  The original A500 also had a full sized USB port but in our tests didn’t have the functionality of the Toshiba Thrive or the Lenovo Thinkpad.

OG Asus Transformer Tablet Gets Ice Cream Sandwich ROM

November 27th, 2011

While this ROM is still a work in progress and a bit slow and buggy we’re confident the developers will round it out to a nice and fast Ice Cream Sandwich build for the original Asus Transformer.

The newer version of the Transformer, the Transformer Prime, is poised to come out in two weeks with an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core (5 actually) processor.  Although the folks at Asus and Nvidia have already tested Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, on the new tablet it will release in two weeks running Honeycomb. We are confident that it will be upgraded quickly.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer sold pretty well, it was sold out often in Best Buy stores. The thin, well built tablet was the first serious Android effort by Asus to come to the United States.  The follow up is sure to delight tablet fans and is already preordering at Amazon and at Gamestop where it will come with a controller for GameStops cloud based gaming service.

Zinio E-Newsstand For Magazines Joins The Kindle Fire Family

November 15th, 2011

The popular magazine newsstand app Zinio has announced today that they are available for the Kindle Fire. We’ve noticed that Zinio has made more and more pre-installed appearances on Android devices. Most recently the MyTouch by LG and the T-Mobile Springboard by Huawei. Zinio is now available on more tablet devices than any other newsstand or magazine reader.

Zinio’s catalog of available magazine titles is like walking into the magazine section of any big box bookstore.  All of the most popular titles are available in e- format and pop off most screens.

Digital reading continues to be one of the fastest growing technology segments. That, coupled with the adoption of tablets has Zinio in a great position. By the end of the year tablets will be in the hands of 35 million users, by 2015 Gartner expects that number to be  208 million.

Amazon’s Next Kindle Fire To Be 8.9 Not 10.1?

November 3rd, 2011

Digitimes is reporting today that the next Kindle Fire to hit the streets will be in the 8.9 inch screen flavor and not the 10.1 inch screen as previously reported.

Digitimes typically gets their information from supply chain sources close to the new devices being manufactured in Asia.  According to Digitimes, Amazon’s display suppliers, Chunghwa Picture Tubes and LG  Display, have begun to production capabilities on an 8.9 inch display.

It’s being reported that the third Amazon Kindle Fire could have a display between 9.7 and 10.1 inches and would come sometime in 2012.

Motorola Xoom Only Ships 100,000 In Q3 Meanwhile Xoom 2 Shows Up In Verizon’s System

October 28th, 2011

Most of the mobile industry players have been reporting their Q3 results this week.  It was Motorola Mobility’s turn this week. Motorola Mobility announced a couple of weeks back that they were going to quietly post their earnings without the typical conference call for discussion.

One of the reasons that they didn’t hold a normal conference call may have been because of the lackluster sales of the Motorola Xoom tablet in the third quarter.  According to the company they only shipped 100,000 tablets in the past three months. Although the tablet has been on the market for a while, Motorola has just started making the upgrade to 4G available, hoping it would spark third quarter sales.

The figure Motorola reported was the number of units shipped, not even sold to end users.  Motorola has reduced the price of the original Xoom to $400 and the 4G/LTE upgrade is free for those who purchase a 3G model. Motorola Mobility is hoping that these two factors will lead to improved sales in the 4th quarter.  Motorola has also repackaged a “family” edition of the Xoom tablet that they are hoping drives holiday sales.

Meanwhile the replacement to the original Motorola Xoom, the Motorola Xoom 2 has shown up in Verizon Wireless’ internal system.

The Motorola Xoom 2 will ship with 4G/LTE in tow. A screen shot of a Verizon Wireless internal system, that Droid-Life has released shows three possible versions of the next generation Xoom. It appears that it will come in a 16gb, 32gb and 64gb version.  There is no indication as to when the Xoom 2 will release, however Motorola Mobility CEO, Sanjay Jha said in their Q2 earnings call that they did have another 4G/LTE tablet due before the end of the year.

Motorola will need to get the Xoom 2 out in time for the holiday rush to have an effect on their Q4 and end of year results.

Unboxing/Quick Review Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9

September 30th, 2011

Back in March at CTIA in Orlando Samsung Mobile introduced two new tablets. They were the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 was released back in June and the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will be here Sunday at Best Buy.

We’ve been testing out the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 since Monday. We originally got a unit that wasn’t ready but Samsung sent us one of the units that will be released Sunday and it’s a great machine.  At IFA 2010 in Berlin, Samsung introduced the first Galaxy Tab, the original 7 inch version.  At the press conference where they introduced that tablet Samsung’s head of mobile, JK Shin eluded to a whole portfolio of tablets forthcoming.  With that portfolio they’ve been experimenting with size, to see if they can find the “sweet spot” for every tablet user.
