Huawei Honor To AT&T

February 2nd, 2012

Way back last June PC Mag’s Sascha Segan got the exclusive on what was at the time a top notch super smartphone. The manufacturer was Huawei, the phone, the Huawei Glory/Honor/Mercury.

The Android powered phone witha 1.4ghz single core processor, 4-inch FWGA (854×860) display, 8mp rear facing camera and front facing camera, arrived in the states via Cricket Wireless just a couple of months ago.

While the phone may not be that big on spec right now, it’s an awesome Android device. We’ve been using the Cricket version since January which is known on the prepaid network as the “Huawei Mercury”

It looks like that same device will head over to AT&T as it’s passed through the FCC with AT&T bands in tow.

The international (GSM) version of the device already has Ice Cream Sandwich in Asia. Hopefully that means that the AT&T version will see an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich sometime soon after release. As for the release date, that’s still a mystery, as is the pricing. If it comes in at the right price though it will be a great mid-range device.

Huawei & ZTE Under U.S. Intelligence Probe

November 17th, 2011

Two years ago if you said Huawei and ZTE in a room with a bunch of Android enthusiasts they may not bat an eye.  Both companies, which come from China are major players in the world wide mobile phone market but until recently weren’t big names in the United States.

Both companies also made their smartphone debut in the U.S. with Cricket Wireless. In 2010 Huawei introduced the Huawei Ascend Android phone on Cricket Wireless. This year, ZTE’s first Android phone in the U.S. also came by way of Cricket called the ZTE score.  ZTE has since launched phones with Boost Mobile and AT&T as well.

Details On T-Mobile Tablets Revealed, Neither November 19th

October 25th, 2011

T-Mobile has posted the release dates for the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 along with the T-Mobile SpringBoard by Huawei.

T-Mobile has slated the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with HSPA+ for a November 2nd launch. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with wi-fi was originally released in June and then followed with a 4G/LTE version for Verizon Wireless.  It’s one of the most popular and best performing Android tablets available. Couple that with America’s largest 4G network and it’s a win-win for T-Mobile customers looking for a rock solid tablet.

If you’re looking for a tablet a little better for the wallet and for the pocket, the T-Mobile SpringBoard, made by Huawei, could be the tablet you’re looking for.  The tablet (see video below) is 7″ and features Honeycomb as well.  The SpringBoard will be available on November 9th.

With two more devices revealed for launch before November 19th we’re still curious about what T-Mobile has up their sleeves for that day.  T-Mobile sent word to their corporate store managers that they should plan to bulk up staffing for extra foot traffic in stores on November 19th.  Hmmmmmm

So which tablet is for you?

Q3 Mobile Mix Report Shows Android With A Steady Lead

October 25th, 2011

Month over month Millennial Media’s Mobile Mix report has shown that Android is steadily growing across their mobile ad platform. Millennial Media has the largest independent mobile ad platform in the world.

Millennial Media gets their data from actual devices that touch their network rather than a small survey sample. The Mobile Mix report often times gives a more accurate snapshot than some of the other data available.  This month the Mobile Mix report covers the entire third quarter rather than just last month.

In the third quarter smartphones grew 7% month over month and 37% year over year. Smartphones overall showed an increase to 72% of the mix of devices with feature phones holding 14% each, respectively.

CTIA: Breaking Huawei Honor To Debut On Cricket Wireless As Huawei Mercury Before The Holidays

October 11th, 2011

We’ve just finished our ritual meeting with the great folks at Cricket Wireless here at CTIA.  Cricket recently announced that with the addition of Best Buy as a nationwide retailer, they are available in 47 states excluding Wyoming, Montana and Alaska.  That’s a pretty big feat for a carrier that just last year was designated “Wireless”.

During our meeting I spent nearly an hour talking with Sergio Garcia, Cricket’s Sr. Director of Business and Product Management along with Greg Lund and Kevin Foth. Together we talked about the innovation that’s going on with Cricket Wireless. Cricket tends to bring their own devices to market rather than the hand me downs from tier 1 carriers.  A perfect example of that is the Samsung Transfix, Samsung Vitality and the forthcoming Huawei Mercury.

Garcia has been with Cricket for 11 years, coming from LG at that time so he’s seen both sides of the Wireless industry.  While he acknowledges the fact that there is a need for buying OEM presented phones, he also likes being able to collaborate with OEM’s to address the needs of Cricket’s customers as well as taking ideas from scratch and telling OEM’s to build it.
