Samsung Blew Motorola Out Of The Water With Their Super Bowl Ad Here’s Why:

February 5th, 2012

So Samsung’s first ever Super Bowl Ad just aired in the fourth quarter of the big game. It started out the same way all the ads in the “The Next Big Thing” campaign started out. A bunch of people standing in line at the Apple store waiting for the next big thing.

Then a guy with a Samsung Galaxy Note walks towards the store drawing oohs and ahhs from the crowd waiting.  One of the hipsters yells “Whoa Whoa Whoa what is that” and of course the young man with the Galaxy Note, walks over, hands it to him and says “It’s the Samsung Galaxy Note”.

A few of the iPhone fans in the line start talking about it. One of the guys says “Samsung, Again” and the young asian woman says “I don’t know what I believe in anymore”. Hipster dude playing with the Galaxy Note says ” I know what I believe In”. Then Justin Hawkins from the band The Darkness appears in a pink and white get up, his guitar drops from the sky and he starts singing their song “I Believe in a Thing Called Love”.

The 60 Million Dollar Dentist

February 5th, 2012

Mark Zuckerberg's Father, Edward Zuckerberg is now worth more than 60 million dollars photo: SAI

Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of money in dentistry I have a good friend who’s an oral surgeon and can support his family and his hobby of racing Ferarri’s. However a 60 million dollar dentist is rare. Especially for a general practicing dentist, not a cosmetic dentist in Beverly Hills.

A 60 million dollar dentist is exactly what Edward Zuckerberg will become after Facebook officially goes public in May. The wondering is over as Facebook filed paperwork to go Public this past week. It typically takes 3-4 months for the SEC to review the paperwork for a company to go public.

The 60 million dollars isn’t coming from son Mark just because he has a good relationship with his father. Mark Zuckerberg’s dad gave his son the start up capital for Facbeook back in 2004.  In exchange Zuck granted his dad 2,000,000 class B shares of Facebook.

The original deal with his father was set to expire after a year however the Facebook board decided that expiring in one year wasn’t fair and in 2009 issued the elder Zuckerberg the 2,000,000 shares. Today, according to Facebook’s S-1 filing, those shares are worth $60,000,000.00

Apple Executive Jumps Ship For A Secret Project At Google

February 5th, 2012

Simon Prakash is leaving Apple for Google photo: SAI

Business Insider is reporting today, by way of Venture Beat, that a high ranking Apple Executive has jumped ship for Google. This comes fresh on the heels of an investigation by the US Justice Department of a non-poaching secret agreement between Apple and Google. It seems that the agreement may have just been violated.

Simon Prakash who served as Apple’s Senior Director of Product Engineering will report to work in Mountain View tomorrow morning instead of his old digs in Cupertino. Prakash served in that Apple position for 8 years. Prior to that he worked for Cielo Communications as director of engineering design validation.

Reports suggest that Prakash will report directly to Google co-founder Sergey Brin who heads up special projects at Google. With his background in product and communications we can’t help but wonder if he will be part of an Android project or something Google is preparing for with the Motorola Mobility acquisition.

With Cyber Bullying On Mobile Devices On The Rise Word Bully 2.0 Is Introduced To Android Market

February 5th, 2012

Earlier this week we revealed an alarming statistic and that is that cyber bullying via mobile phone is up 41% for teenagers.

Cyber bullying originated online and was most prevalent on social networking sites like Myspace and Facebook. On those sites someone would start picking on the bullying target and others would flock in and join them. Kids bullied other kids over everything.

Cyber Bullying got so bad that a child’s mother was able to cyber bully another child to suicide over cheerleading, read about that here on Dr. Phil.

Motorola Looking For 2.5% Of iPhone Sales For Patent Use

February 5th, 2012

While Samsung and Apple have been battling it out in a worldwide patent theater, Motorola has taken a back seat. Well Friday Motorola returned front and center as a legal briefing from Apple’s lawyers in Germany has surfaced.

The briefing details a request by Motorola Mobility to Apple for 2.5% of iPhone sales in exchange for the use of Motorola Mobility’s standard-essential patents that address fundamental 3G connectivity and transmission of data over a cellular network. When German courts ruled that Apple violated Motorola Mobility patents, Apple was forced to stop selling certain products via the German Apple online store.

Android Finishes The Year On Top, Way On Top

February 4th, 2012

Canalys has released their end of year numbers for global smartphone sales. It’s no surprise that everyone’s favorite little green robot operating system is on top of the heap, in fact way on top of the heap.

Before we get all technical remember we are talking about smartphone units here. Android finished up the year with 48.8% of the worldwid smartphone market share. Sales were estimated at 237.8 million handsets for the year.

Apple finished out 2011 with 93.1 million iPhones shipped at 19.1% of the market. Canalys says Apple shipped 37 million iPhones in Q4 while Android did 81.9 million units. In both cases more than double.

The picture isn’t very good for Microsoft. Their Windows Phone platform, including new Windows 7 devices, mango devices and legacy devices with Windows mobile sold 6.8 million for the year. That puts Samsung Bada devies, Symbian devices and the declining RIM devices in front of Microsoft, despite the fact they’ve spent hundreds of millions in advertising.

Smartphones as a whole rose to 62.7% with over 487 million smartphones sold in 2011

Keep Track Of Your Driving Speed With My Max Speed 2.0 For Android

February 4th, 2012

Iconosys has announced the release of My Max Speed 2.0 to the Android Market. My Max Speed keeps track of the speed that you’re traveling at and makes a database notation every 5 seconds.

Why would you need this kind of information:

- To monitor how fast you actually drove on a trip
- To monitor how fast you actually drove on the way to work and then recalculating your commute
- To makes sure you stay within the legal limit
- To know if your new driver children are speeding

There are countless reasons that you could use information like this. My Max Speed 2.0 enters all this information into a spreadsheet that you can download as an excel file.  Not only that but within the spreadsheet, on an Android phone, you can tap the speed and it will show you on a map where you were traveling at.

Wayne Irving CEO of Iconosys and father of three teenage children said:”There are hundreds of reasons to run My Max Speed on your smart phone. We expect many will help protect drivers’ rights while others will make the roads safer. For example, our children are more apt to drive slower/safer if they know there is a chance that I will be checking their speed reports,”

Accessory Spotlight: Recharge Your Samsung Galaxy Tab In The Car

February 4th, 2012

Shortly after the release of the original 7″ Samsung Galaxy Tab I found myself camped out like an Apple Fan Boy at Toys R Us on Thanksgiving night. It was cold, wet and rainy but luckily I had an umbrella that worked great, a case on my Galaxy Tab and I was going to watch a movie or something to stay entertained. That’s when I quickly learned that not all 30 pin connectors are created equally.

I showed up in the line with about 50% to go on the Galaxy Tab. I thought I was lucky because I had a fully charged Amzer solar charger so if my tab went down I could just plug it in to the solar chargers USB port and voila.  No dice.  I got a red X over the battery charging indicator and the Galaxy Tab quickly died after that.

Motorola Forgot To Wipe The Data On Some Refurbed Xooms

February 4th, 2012

Motorola has made a mistake and wants to rectify it as soon as possible. We learned from a press release sent out on Friday that an allotment of Xoom tablets that were sent to Woot to be sold as “refurbished” were not properly wiped.

The tablets in question were sold by Woot between October and December of 2011. This accident only pertains to the refurbished stock and of course not new in box stock.  Without being properly wiped, new owners of these previously owned tablets could have photos, videos, contacts, passwords, email messages etc from the previous owner. This is a big no-no when it comes to privacy and personal security, I mean just imagine what would happen if Gizmodo bought one of those tablets.

Android Getting Approved For The US Army, iOS Not So Much

February 3rd, 2012

image According to a report today on 9to5google by the way of CNN Android is preparing to suit up for deployment in the US Army.

Because of Android’s open architecture the US government as able to make tight security revisions to the operating system. The government tweaks to Android will allow government and military personnel transfer and view confidential and clearance based documents on an Android device.

The modified version of Android can be retrofitted to commercially available Android devices by the US government.

While many user government officials and military personnel would love to have the ability to use iPhones and iPads for government business they can’t.  According to the report, Apple does not want to give up access to the core software to anyone. Apparently they don’t even trust the government.
