Is The Motorola Droid 4 Ready For A February 10th Launch?

February 3rd, 2012

The Motorola Droid 4 has already been added to Verizon’s Droiddoes website. There have also been quite a few leaks which point us to a launch next week. If the latest leak, reported by phonearena.com serves to be correct, than we should see the Droid 4 next Friday on February 10th.

Phonearena received a screen shot of Verizon Wireless’ info manager page for the highly anticipated Motorola Droid 4. The screen grab has the release day pegged at February 10th.

Google Wallet Opens Up To Nexus S And Galaxy Nexus On AT&T, There’s A Work Around For Verizon

February 3rd, 2012

When Google Wallet rolled out exclusively to the Sprint Nexus S 4G Android enthusiasts everywhere couldn’t wait until Google Wallet was available on other devices. It was quickly discovered that Google Wallet could be side loaded onto a rooted or unrooted Galaxy Nexus on Verizon Wireless.

Now, Google has officially made Google Wallet available to Nexus S owners on AT&T as well as those running a GSM Galaxy Nexus on AT&T. If you have one of those devices on AT&T you can simply go into the Android Market, search Google Wallet and voila you’ll have it on your phone.

Google Wallet still won’t show up in the Android Market for the Galaxy Nexus however as Phandroid points out there is a somewhat easy workaround for you that doesn’t require root and can be downloaded to the device rather than side loaded.

Qualcomm & Ericsson Show Off VoLTE

February 2nd, 2012

When Verizon first announced their 4G/LTE network back in the fall of 2010 many journalists on the conference call were wondering about one thing, and that is VoLTE. In case you’re not familiar, VoLTE is Voice over LTE.

Many 4G/LTE handset users don’t realize that only data is currently handled over Verizon Wireless’ robust 4G/LTE network, calls are actually made using 3G/CDMA. With VoLTE that all changes. Calls will travel over the 4G/LTE network and with that they will become clearer and sound better.

Galaxy Nexus Plus On The Way? To Who?

January 30th, 2012

The folks over at Androidandme spotted something very interesting on nenamark. They found a Galaxy Nexus sporting a PowerVR SGX 544 processor.

The original graphics processor in the Galaxy Nexus that’s currently available is the SGX540 which is part of the Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 processor. By all means this is still a great processor however the SGX544 is part of the next generation of OMAP the 4470.

Androidandme points out that they’ve seen the SFX544 processor in an ad for Sprint’s Galaxy Nexus. The original Galaxy Nexus is running underclocked a 1.2ghz on the OMAP4460 which is capable of running at 1.5ghz. Is Sprint going to use the 4460 wide open or could we see the 4470 underclocked to 1.5ghz.

Only time will tell. Perhaps this could be a whole new device, like the Galaxy Nexus Plus. Also the Nexus brand has always been multi-carrier and we feel that it’s odd we’ve heard no official talk or loud rumors about a T-Mobile or AT&T Galaxy Nexus. The international GSM version will run on both networks but perhaps we could see this new version of the Galaxy Nexus on one of our two GSM carriers.

Motorola Droid Razr Developer Edition Coming

January 30th, 2012

Motorola released the original Motorola Droid in November of 2009. It is one of the best selling Android phones to date.  Motorola has had a developer arm called MotoDev since roughly the same time.

In 2011 Motorola became even more developer friendly by announcing they would start unlocking some bootloaders. While they aren’t going to unlock the original Droid Razr or the Droid Razr Maxx they have announced that they are releasing a developer’s edition of the Droid Razr with an unlocked bootloader.

The developer’s edition will release in Europe first, however we hear that it will hit U.S. soil as well.

An important factor to consider with the developer’s edition of the Droid Razr is that in a press briefing last week Motorola’s Sr. VP Alain Mutricy said that they would be focusing on high end Android devices and expanding the Droid Razr line, presumably beyond the already announced at the time, Motorola Droid Razr Maxx.

Motorola announced, prior to the release of the Droid Razr, that the bootloader would be unlockable and that decision would be on the carrier, of course Verizon Wireless declined.

Confirmed: The Droid Razr And Razr Maxx Are The Same Except Battery And Size

January 27th, 2012

Our friends at Droid-Life have confirmed what we’ve been told all along, the Droid Razr and the Droid Razr Maxx are 100% the same aside from that gigantic battery in the Droid Razr Maxx and the thickness it brings.

As you can see from the image above the software within the original Droid Razr and the Droid Razr Maxx is identical. Even the software version is the same.

What does this mean? It means that when an update rolls out for the Droid Razr it should be available for the Droid Razr Maxx as well. It also means that the root methods, custom ROMs and everything else should be the same.

Update On The Way To The HTC Rezound On Verizon Wireless

January 26th, 2012

Verizon Wireless is preparing a pretty thorugh software update for the HTC Rezound. Unfortunately it’s not an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich just yet, but an update is an update.  Verizon Wireless has posted the update document that usually signals the update is right around the corner.

According to the PDF the update addresses or fixes:

  • Screen Timeout issues while connected to Wifi have been resolved.
  • Resolved issue with Mobile Hotspot data stalling while multiple users are connected.
  • Improved audio quality during voice call.
  • Reduced forced closures related to the People application.
  • Improved device stability reduces continuous resets.
  • Resolved issue with Task Manager stopping Mail background service.

This update is also expected to fix a signal strength meter error.

Unlike the HTC phones on Sprint, Verizon Wireless was not using CarrierIQ so this update was not meant to remove that from the Rezound.

All in all since the release of the Rezound it’s been pretty smooth sailing. The device came out on time by an Android fans standards and is doing a great job of pulling it’s weight on the ever so expanding 4G/LTE network.

Leaked Verizon Wireless Roadmap Confused On Droid 4 Release

January 26th, 2012

Droid-Life has received an updated Verizon Wireless road map that shows the next couple of months worth of device releases.

According to this road map though the Motorola Droid 4 was released on January 10, 2012 and gets a discount today. Of course we know that’s not the case. The 26th was the first rumored release date however the device has been pushed back without a new leaked date.

The road map also shows the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx was released on January 10th and of course we know that’s not the case, the Droid Razr Maxx releases today.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 4G/LTE which was also announced at CES alongside the Droid Razr Maxx and Droid 4 looks like it will be released on February 23rd of course with the accuracy of the rest of this map we never know.

If this road map didn’t first appear on Droid-Life we would actually be doubting the validity of the  entire thing.

Verizon Wireless Motorola Droid Razr Maxx Available Today For $299

January 25th, 2012

The Verizon Wireless Motorola Droid Razr Maxx is available starting today for just $299 on a new two year agreement. The Droid Razr Maxx adds a 3300mah battery to the original Droid Razr device. When the original Droid Razr came out a couple of months ago we found out that the battery was not user serviceable which meant that it would not support extended life batteries or any other after market battery.

With the Droid Razr Maxx’s 3300mah battery the problem is solved and at the same price point the original Droid Razr debuted at. The Droid Razr Maxx supports up to 21 continuous hours of talk time and somehow Motorola was able to squeeze that 3300mah battery in a case that’s still just 8.99mm thick.

Verizon Officially Announces Droid Razr Maxx January 26th

January 24th, 2012

Verizon Wireless and Motorola officially announced the Droid Razr Maxx at CES 2012 just a couple of weeks ago in Las Vegas. The Droid Razr Maxx adds a 3300mah battery to an already slim phone with a great set of features.

The Motorola Droid Razr featured an un-user replaceable battery. Because of that, extended life batteries were an impossibility for Droid Razr owners. Motorola has solved that problem with the Droid Razr Maxx.  Motorola managed to put the 3300mah battery into an 8.99mm thin frame.

Motorola Droid Razr Owners Invited To Soak Test, Probably Not Ice Cream Sandwich

January 24th, 2012

Motorola Droid Razr owners are being invited to a soak test by Motorola. A soak test is when an OEM sends out basically a beta version of an update before rolling it out to the masses. Motorola has a pretty aggressive soak test program and typically updates aren’t far behind the invitations to a soak test.

According to this post on Droid-Life Motorola Droid Razr owners in Motorola’s Feedback Network were invited to test out something new for their Droid Razr’s. No further details were given.

Naturally it was everyone’s first assumption that the soak test was Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, however according to this post at Phandroid.com, it’s more than likely an update to Android 2.3.6 which is still a version of Android. This update was leaked two weeks ago during CES so the news kind of fell to the wayside.

Verizon Wireless Drops Droid Incredible 2 To Just $9.99

January 23rd, 2012

Look back two years and you’ll remember the original HTC Droid Incredible. You may also recall the rumors that were actually started by Google that said that the original Google Nexus One (made by HTC) was headed to Verizon Wireless. That never happened, instead Verizon Wireless got the HTC Droid Incredible.

In 2011 Verizon Wireless re-upped the Droid Incredible to the Droid Incredible 2 with a single core 1ghz processor, 4″ display, Android 2.3 Gingerbread and an 8 mega pixel camera. This was by no stretch of the imagination, a mid-range phone at the time.
