While T-Mobile UK Gives Users The Full Monty, T-Mobile USA To Throttle Roaming Data

January 31st, 2012

A new leaked document uncovered by the team at Tmonews has some big news for T-Mobile users. While T-Mobile UK users are celebrating over their new “Full Monty” data plans, T-Mobile USA has plans to throttle roaming data users.

According to the leaked document, T-Mobile will cut off customers roaming data when they cross over thresholds. The new roaming thresholds correspond with T-Mobile’s data brackets.  For those on 200mb data plans, users will only be able to use 10mb of roaming data. For those customers on 10gb plans will see their roaming data cut off at 200mb.

In case you didn’t know, Sprint’s “Truly Unlimited” data doesn’t apply to roaming data. Sprint will cut you off after 300mb of roaming data.

Hopefully some of that UK goodness can rub off on T-Mobile USA.

T-Mobile UK Introduces No Holds Barred Unlimited Data, T-Mobile USA, Not So Much… Yet

January 31st, 2012

T-Mobile in the UK has unveiled a new plant that their customers are going to love. They’ve released a totally unlimited plan which will debut Wednesday at UK T-Mobile stores.

The plan will cost just £41 per month on a new two year agreement. But wait there’s more…. Where T-Mobile USA throttles customers on their unlimited data plans when they reach a certain threshold, T-Mobile UK will not. But wait there’s even more… there are no “fair use” restrictions on the new plan meaning you can use VOIP, P2P file sharing, streaming, whatever you want.

T-Mobile UK is calling the plan the Full Monty plan. Hopefully, as T-Mobile USA rebuilds itself this year, we may see them open up to ideas like this… or you could move to the UK.

Shhhh T-Mobile Adding Mobile HotSpot To Some Data Plans For A Limited Time

January 19th, 2012

One of the big benefits from rooting your Android phone is the ability to access wireless hotspot/tether without paying your carrier. All four carriers offer mobile hotspot via a native Android setting in versions 2.0 and higher.

There has been an ongoing debate on whether or not it’s kosher for carriers to charge for a feature that Google included in the native Android operating system. The other side to this debate is that naturally the mobile hotspot feature uses more data on most carriers already bogged down data networks.

T-Mobile is now preparing to silently launch a couple of new data plans on January 25th bundling the mobile hotspot feature. According to this report from a T-mobile ninja at Tmonews, T-Mobile will launch a premium 5gb data plan and an ultra 10gb data plan. Both of these new plans will bundle T-Mobile hotspot and Mobile Life Album Plus services for free.

Walmart & T-Mobile Add Unlimited Plan

January 18th, 2012

T-Mobile and Walmart have added a new Unlimited Talk, Text and Web Plan to their Walmart Family Mobile Plans.

Last year Walmart teamed up with T-Mobile to offer value based smartphone and traditional mobile phone solutions to Walmart customers under the Walmart Family Mobile branding an exclusive venture with the nations 4th largest carries.

According to a Harris Interactive study 65% of smartphone users regularly use their phone’s camera to take and send pictures to family and friends which of course can become costly on fixed data plans. Additionally the study revealed that 44% of new smartphone owners cited the cost of their data plan as the biggest influencer in their decision to purchase a plan with their smartphone.

The new Walmart Family Mobile Unlimited Talk Text and Web Plan will cost just $45 per month. The caveat is this is a 3G plan, while data is unlimited the speed of the data is only 3G through the first 5gb

Best of 2011 – Carrier: T-Mobile

January 1st, 2012

Call me absolutely ridunkulously crazy but for our Best of 2011′s we’re giving the carrier award to T-Mobile.

T-Mobile has undoubtedly been through a lot this year. After it was announced in March that AT&T was planning to buy T-Mobile for $39 billion dollars the news rocked the country and cleared out T-mobile stores nationwide.

Despite all this T-Mobile kept pumping out great Android phones like the MyTouch 4G Slide, The HTC Sensation, The HTC Amaze and the Samsung Galaxy S II.

T-Mobile Springboard To Get Ice Cream Sandwich?

December 27th, 2011

Leaked photos are coming out of China tonight that show the Huawei MediaPad tablet running Ice Cream Sandwich. The MediaPad was released worldwide by Huawei and of course had a different name here stateside. It’s known as the T-Mobile Springboard here in the states.

If the photo above is any indication we may see Android 4.0 on the 7″ tablet that was originally released with Android 3.2. The T-Mobile Springboard is the most affordable, Android tablet on the market with Android 3.2 Honeycomb, a great display and the Android market and Gapps intact.

Huawei isn’t a stranger to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. They released an Android 4.0 build to the Huawei Honor overseas.

Sprint Releases Statement On Official Break Up Of AT&T/T-Mobile

December 19th, 2011

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse Photo credit: TDG

Monday afternoon AT&T announced that they were no longer seeking to merge with T-Mobile. That leaves AT&T on the hook for a $4 billion dollar break up payment to the nations 4th largest carrier.

It hasn’t looked good for the proposed merger since Thanksgiving. That was when AT&T withdrew it’s application to merge with T-Mobile after FCC Chairman Julius Genachowki has asked for an administrative hearing on the pending merger.

Sprint has been a huge opponent of the merger since it was announced the day before last spring’s CTIA Mobile Life convention in Orlando Florida.

Sprint issued this official statement: (after the break)

AT&T Issues Statement On T-Mobile Merger

December 13th, 2011

Things aren’t looking good for AT&T and their quest to merge with T-Mobile. As we all know by now AT&T withdrew their application to merge with T-Mobile over the Thanksgiving holiday.  Now they’ve asked the department of justice to postpone their court case until January, however they definitely don’t want the DOJ to throw out the case.

Today they issued a statement on where they are with the merger:

“AT&T and Deutsche Telekom advised Judge Huvelle this morning that they wish to stay any further Court proceedings until January 18, 2012, to allow the two companies time to evaluate all options.  The U.S. Department of Justice joined in the filing.

“AT&T is committed to working with Deutsche Telekom to find a solution that is in the best interests of our respective customers, shareholders and employees.  We are actively considering whether and how to revise our current transaction to achieve the necessary regulatory approvals so that we can deliver the capacity enhancements and improved customer service that can only be derived from combining our two companies’ wireless assets.”

As we interpreted the statement it looks like AT&T may be rethinking the entire merger. Shortly after withdrawing their application it was reported that AT&T and Deutsche Telekom may be exploring options for a joint venture of sorts.

Carly And Over 100 Choir Singers In Magenta Dresses Take Over Mall For T-Mobile’s Holiday Greeting

December 12th, 2011

T-Mobile shows again that while their merger with AT&T is in complete chaos and turmoil, things are business as usual at big magenta. Of course during the holiday season that means big celebrations, big things and lots of fun.

A few weeks ago we started seeing tweets, and lots of them, from various people in the Chicago area who said they were working on a T-Mobile commercial. The variety and sheer number of different people tweeting about this T-Mobile shoot meant something big was happening.

While it looks like T-Mobile won’t be merging anytime soon we’ve said time and time again one of the biggest things that we would miss about T-Mobile was the fun. T-Mobile throws industry, media and customer appreciation events like no other company in the wireless industry. The holidays is no different.

Sure shutting down a mall, hiring hundreds of choir singers and writing a 3:48 song just for Carly to say “Happy Holidays From T-Mobile” may be a bit much but it’s refreshing this time of year and something only the fun department at T-Mobile could engineer.

Enjoy, and Happy Holidays from T-Mobile

Department Of Justice May Withdraw AT&T Lawsuit Which Would Be Bad News For Them

December 11th, 2011

Typically withdrawing a lawsuit would be seen as a victory for the defendant but not in the case of the nations second largest wireless carrier AT&T.

The Department of Justice is considering whether or not to halt or withdraw it’s lawsuit against AT&T and their proposed merger with T-Mobile, the nations fourth largest wireless carrier. This seems like a no brainer as over Thanksgiving AT&T withdrew their application from the FCC to merge with T-Mobile and that’s exactly the reason cited by the DOJ to stop the lawsuit.

MetroPCS CFO: AT&T/T-Mobile Merger Likely To Fail

December 6th, 2011

BGR is reporting today that MetroPCS CFO J. Braxton Carter has said that AT&T’s proposed $39 billion dollar merger with T-Mobile is likely to fail. Someone please send a memo to Mr. Carter and let him know that at 10:00 pm at night it’s likely to be dark.

What was the first indication for this brilliant and profound statement? Was it the attorney generals mounting up against the merger? Was it Dan Hesse’s constant speaking out against the merger? Was it the Department of Justice lawsuit against the merger?

No?

Maybe it was FCC Commissioner Julius Genachowski requesting an administrative hearing about the meger?  No? Perhaps it was AT&T and Deutsche Telekom withdrawing the merger application from the FCC?  Still no? Maybe it was the massive report prepared by the FCC declaring that most of AT&T’s proposed statements about the merger were false? Still no? Ok BGR tell us what brilliance Carter had into the merger likely failing:

Carter spoke at the UBS investor conference in New York City today and said:

“almost kind of moot at this point given the intense opposition by the government.”

there you have it, more at the source

AT&T Responds To FCC Report On Merger With T-Mobile

December 1st, 2011

Over the Thanksgiving Holiday AT&T withdrew it’s application to merge with T-Mobile from the FCC. This came in response to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski requesting an FCC administrative hearing on the proposed merger.  It was also widely speculated that AT&T was hoping to suppress information that the FCC may release during that hearing.

The FCC took it upon themselves to release the information in a “Staff Report” earlier this week despite the transaction being withdrawn.

Unboxing & Quick Review Video: LG Double Play On T-Mobile

November 30th, 2011

Anyone who’s been a fan or follower of thedroidguy for any amount of time knows we like to check out phones with unique form factors. The Kyocera Echo, the Droid Pro and the Pantech Pocket are all phones that may not have won the hearts of Android enthusiasts but were unique in their own right. The LG Double Play is one of those phones.

The LG Double Play gets it’s name from it’s two screens. It’s not two screens that come out to hook together and make one big screen like the Echo but it has one normal style screen and a 2″ screen located in the middle of the slide out qwerty keyboard.

FCC Releaes Report On AT&T/T-Mobile Merger Despite Withdrawal

November 29th, 2011

The proposed AT&T/T-Mobile merger came to a head over the Thanskgiving holiday weekend as AT&T and Deutsche Telekom withdrew their application for merging from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Just as many American’s were preparing for their Thanksgiving weekend, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski had requested that the merger go to an administrative hearing by the FCC which would have happened this week.  Part of the decision to withdraw the application from the FCC was AT&T hoping to curb the FCC from releasing some of their concerns to the public.

Much to the surprise of AT&T and Deutsche Telekom the FCC went ahead and released those findings in a report made public Tuesday.
