Upgrade Eligible Customers For Sprint May Get $100 Bonus

February 2nd, 2012

In 2011 Sprint made a lot of changes to some of their legacy programs that ended up making some Sprint customers a little upset. They also made some contract term changes that allowed some customers to get out of their contracts early.

Now we’ve come to find that Sprint is trying to hold onto customers who have become upgrade eligible and haven’t yet upgraded. Those customers, currently going month to month, are able to leave Sprint at anytime after they reach their two year mark.  Sprint’s hoping a new incentive will keep those customers right where they are.

While T-Mobile UK Gives Users The Full Monty, T-Mobile USA To Throttle Roaming Data

January 31st, 2012

A new leaked document uncovered by the team at Tmonews has some big news for T-Mobile users. While T-Mobile UK users are celebrating over their new “Full Monty” data plans, T-Mobile USA has plans to throttle roaming data users.

According to the leaked document, T-Mobile will cut off customers roaming data when they cross over thresholds. The new roaming thresholds correspond with T-Mobile’s data brackets.  For those on 200mb data plans, users will only be able to use 10mb of roaming data. For those customers on 10gb plans will see their roaming data cut off at 200mb.

In case you didn’t know, Sprint’s “Truly Unlimited” data doesn’t apply to roaming data. Sprint will cut you off after 300mb of roaming data.

Hopefully some of that UK goodness can rub off on T-Mobile USA.

Galaxy Nexus Plus On The Way? To Who?

January 30th, 2012

The folks over at Androidandme spotted something very interesting on nenamark. They found a Galaxy Nexus sporting a PowerVR SGX 544 processor.

The original graphics processor in the Galaxy Nexus that’s currently available is the SGX540 which is part of the Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 processor. By all means this is still a great processor however the SGX544 is part of the next generation of OMAP the 4470.

Androidandme points out that they’ve seen the SFX544 processor in an ad for Sprint’s Galaxy Nexus. The original Galaxy Nexus is running underclocked a 1.2ghz on the OMAP4460 which is capable of running at 1.5ghz. Is Sprint going to use the 4460 wide open or could we see the 4470 underclocked to 1.5ghz.

Only time will tell. Perhaps this could be a whole new device, like the Galaxy Nexus Plus. Also the Nexus brand has always been multi-carrier and we feel that it’s odd we’ve heard no official talk or loud rumors about a T-Mobile or AT&T Galaxy Nexus. The international GSM version will run on both networks but perhaps we could see this new version of the Galaxy Nexus on one of our two GSM carriers.

Motorola Photon 4G Owners Invited To Soak Test

January 26th, 2012

Just the other day we read about a Motorola soak test for owners of the original Droid Razr. Now we are hearing that members of Motorola’s feedback network with Sprint Motorola Photon 4Gs have also been invited to a soak test.

We were pretty certain that the Droid Razr soak test was for an Android 2.3.6 build and not Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Although other sites are reporting that their feeling is that this Photon 4G soak test isn’t Ice Cream Sandwich either, nothing has leaked to the contrary.

ZTE Bringing “Optik” 7″ Dual Core Android Honeycomb Tablet To Sprint

January 25th, 2012

Back in December ZTE said that they were going to focus on delivering higher quality Android superphones to the United States. We also heard several rumors that ZTE would be bringing a new tablet to market as well. That tablet seems to have appeared, and it’s headed to Sprint.

Phandroid is reporting tonight that the ZTE Optik is a 7″ dual core Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet headed to Sprint. The best part is if the sources are correct, that tablet will cost a mere $99 on a new two year agreement.

January 24th, 2012

According to a leaked end of life document on sprintfeed.com the original HTC Evo 4G has reached it’s end of life this week.

The HTC Evo 4G was introduced by Sprint on June 4, 2010. It was also one of the two take home devices at the Google I/O conference in May of 2010 ahead of the actual Evo launch.  By American standards it was the first Android device on a 4G network as the Sprint Evo 4G has access to Sprint’s WiMax network which was their first foray into 4G.

Virgin Mobile To Start Throttling Unlimited Data In March

January 19th, 2012

This whole throttling unlimited data business is a sticky issue. Take T-Mobile and Walmart for instance, yesterday we ran this story highlighting the fact that T-Mobile will start offering their Walmart Family Mobile customers unlimited data for $45 a month.

While that sounds like a great offer it’s only for the first 5gb a month, and that in itself is for a limited time. After a customer crosses the 5gb mark they will still enjoy free data but at much much slower rates. That’s also a 3G plan as opposed to anything that involves the number 4.

LG Has An Eco-Friendly 4G/LTE Android Headed To Sprint

January 18th, 2012

The LG Viper 4G/LTE Ecos is headed to Sprint’s new 4G/LTE network right behind the already announced Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The LG device is expected to come in cheaper than the Galaxy Nexus and have a better screen.

The Nova touchscreen is brighter than the superAMOLED screen featured on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The Viper also offers some eco-friendly perks as well.

The Viper’s charger has a no load consumption rating of .03W which is better than the EC code of conduct for energy efficiency.

Sprint’s 4G/LTE network won’t be ready for devices for a couple more months however the specs of the LG Viper should still be a great device. It will come with Android 2.3 Gingerbread (upgrading to Ice Cream Sandwich), a 1.2 ghz dual core processor, Nova screen, dual cameras (5mp/VGA), and expandable memory via microSD.

The LG Viper will be a Sprint ID phone which means users will be able to access the Sprint ID packs that combine themes, wall papers and apps.

CES 2012: Hands On With The Sprint Galaxy Nexus 4G LTE

January 11th, 2012

Monday at CES 2012 was a huge day for Android phone announcements. LG announced the LG Spectrum for Verizon. Huawei announced the Ascend P1 S, Samsung announced the Galaxy Note to AT&T and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 4G/LTE to Verizon Wireless.

The other really big announcement was that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus was headed to Sprint with 4G/LTE in tow. Sprint announced on Monday that 4 Sprint 4G LTE markets were testing and would be available to customers in the first part of the year.

Sprint said they plan to have at least 10 markets by the end of this year and many more in 2013.

As for the Galaxy Nexus, it does see a slight processor upgrade to 1.5ghz and unlike the Verizon Wireless version, it will come with Google Wallet on board. Google Wallet was first introduced on Sprint’s Samsung Galaxy S 4G.

Sprint Officially Announces Galaxy Nexus As 4G LTE Launch Device

January 9th, 2012

It’s now official: Sprint will be the second US carrier to officially carry Google’s flagship device, the Galaxy Nexus. Alongside their announcement of 4G LTE, Sprint indirectly announced that the Galaxy Nexus would, in fact, be coming to kick things off. By this time, we’re already familiar with the Galaxy Nexus and all of its Ice Cream Sandwich glory, and we’re sure this model will be extremely similar to the Verizon 4G LTE model.

Sprint isn’t just stopping there, though. Remember the controversy over whether the Verizon Galaxy Nexus was really a Nexus because Verizon decided to halt Google Wallet? Yeah, we do too. That reason alone caused delays for the Verizon Nexus, and Sprint is slapping them in the face with the screen of their Galaxy Nexus showing–can you guess?–Google Wallet. So there you have it, Sprint is finally getting some 4G LTE Ice Cream Sandwich love, and the Galaxy Nexus is “coming soon” along with the LG Viper.

Sprint Extends Deadline For Lightsquared Deal

January 2nd, 2012

Last week Sprint released a progress report on it’s Network Vision which is a collective plan for all of Sprint’s network enhancements including 4G/LTE. Sprint said in that report that they were on track to start lighting up a 4G/LTE network in 2013.

Now that we are just one year away from that goal, many are curious as to how they are going to tackle this goal. Originally Sprint had reported that they had entered into an agreement with Northern Virginia based Lightsquared.  However, shortly after that announcement Clearwire, which Sprint owns more than 50% of, had run out of money. Sprint had agreed to invest more into Clearwire who is also working on building out 4G/LTE.

Sprint Says They Are Still On Track For LTE In 2013

December 28th, 2011

Earlier this year Sprint laid out their Network Vision plan to take Sprint’s Now Network into the future. Sprint was the first carrier to roll out something called “4G” with their WiMax service, a joint venture with ClearWire for which the own more than fifty percent.

While WiMax is fast, it appears that as analysts predicted, 4G/LTE has become the standard for 4G.  Verizon Wireless has the the biggest 4G/LTE footprint so far, dwarfing AT&T’s LTE rollout which is still under 20 markets.

Sprint shocked many this fall when they announced that they were going to start rolling out 4G Advanced LTE. Originally a deal was announced with LightSquared, a Northern Virginia based start up that is having problems with the FCC and their network interfering with GPS satellites.  In the 11th hour it became clear that Sprint would reinvest with Clearwire and partner with them for 4G/LTE. Clearwire has reportedly tested the LTE Advanced and received theoretic download speeds of 100 mbps.
