Google Wallet Opens Up To Nexus S And Galaxy Nexus On AT&T, There’s A Work Around For Verizon

February 3rd, 2012

When Google Wallet rolled out exclusively to the Sprint Nexus S 4G Android enthusiasts everywhere couldn’t wait until Google Wallet was available on other devices. It was quickly discovered that Google Wallet could be side loaded onto a rooted or unrooted Galaxy Nexus on Verizon Wireless.

Now, Google has officially made Google Wallet available to Nexus S owners on AT&T as well as those running a GSM Galaxy Nexus on AT&T. If you have one of those devices on AT&T you can simply go into the Android Market, search Google Wallet and voila you’ll have it on your phone.

Google Wallet still won’t show up in the Android Market for the Galaxy Nexus however as Phandroid points out there is a somewhat easy workaround for you that doesn’t require root and can be downloaded to the device rather than side loaded.

Huawei Honor To AT&T

February 2nd, 2012

Way back last June PC Mag’s Sascha Segan got the exclusive on what was at the time a top notch super smartphone. The manufacturer was Huawei, the phone, the Huawei Glory/Honor/Mercury.

The Android powered phone witha 1.4ghz single core processor, 4-inch FWGA (854×860) display, 8mp rear facing camera and front facing camera, arrived in the states via Cricket Wireless just a couple of months ago.

While the phone may not be that big on spec right now, it’s an awesome Android device. We’ve been using the Cricket version since January which is known on the prepaid network as the “Huawei Mercury”

It looks like that same device will head over to AT&T as it’s passed through the FCC with AT&T bands in tow.

The international (GSM) version of the device already has Ice Cream Sandwich in Asia. Hopefully that means that the AT&T version will see an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich sometime soon after release. As for the release date, that’s still a mystery, as is the pricing. If it comes in at the right price though it will be a great mid-range device.

Qualcomm & Ericsson Show Off VoLTE

February 2nd, 2012

When Verizon first announced their 4G/LTE network back in the fall of 2010 many journalists on the conference call were wondering about one thing, and that is VoLTE. In case you’re not familiar, VoLTE is Voice over LTE.

Many 4G/LTE handset users don’t realize that only data is currently handled over Verizon Wireless’ robust 4G/LTE network, calls are actually made using 3G/CDMA. With VoLTE that all changes. Calls will travel over the 4G/LTE network and with that they will become clearer and sound better.

Samsung Infuse 4G Gets Android 2.3.6 Finally!

February 2nd, 2012

The Samsung Infuse 4G on AT&T’s HSPA+ pre 4G, 4G network has received a software update.

Originally introduced with Android 2.2 Froyo back in May 2011, the device is now getting Gingerbread via an kies update to Android 2.3.6. A Kies update means that the user of the Infuse 4G needs to use Samsung’s kies software on PC or Mac and download the update via usb cable.

This won’t bring the Infuse 4G up to the latest version of Android, which we all know is Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but it’s a welcomed upgrade from Android 2.2 which is what the phone runs now.

Gingerbread brings improved cut and paste, a new download manager, new keyboard and other refinements.

Take Note: Samsung To Introduce Revolutionary Device During The Super Bowl

January 31st, 2012

We’ve searched Adweek everyday since Samsung’s Dallas based PR firm announced that Samsung had bought ad space during the Superbowl. Adweek, the nation’s leading publication related to advertising, has a huge Super Bowl section and tracks which companies bought what space and if they can, they say what those companies will be showing.

Mums the word when it comes to Samsung’s Super Bowl presence, except for some tweets today. The first one above has everyone buzzing about not only Samsung’s first Super Bowl ad but also what device they’ll be launching.

The Samsung Galaxy Note will be available in two colors, carbon blue and ceramic white. Pre-orders start this Sunday February 5th for a February 17th delivery ( yes you get your Galaxy Note two days early if you preorder).

The 5.3″ Samsung Galaxy Note took the world by surprise back in September when it was announced at the IFA trade show at Messe Berlin.  The device is a hybrid between a phone and a tablet. It’s the perfect size for a busy person.

The Galaxy Note boasts a 5.3″ HD SuperAMOLED screen (1280×800).  In addition to enjoying Android 2.3 Gingerbread on a larger screen the entire device is optimized for use with the including Samsung “S-Pen” that lives attached to the device in old school Palm Pilot fashion.

In addition to website mark ups, and navigation the S-Pen is optimized for a new Samsung app called S-Memo which recognizes multiple types of input. With S-Memo you can input with the S-Pen, by hand, voice, sketch drawings and more.

The Galaxy Note also introduces a new planning app that pulls your calendar, tasks and todos into one app that utilizes the devices full screen.  It also has native screen capture that doesn’t require root access to capture important screens, web pages, apps etc and saves them as photo files.

And Now Atrix Users Your Soak Test Invites Are Available

January 27th, 2012

If you’re in Motorola’s feedback network and own a Motorola Atrix 4G good news as invites for a soak test are starting to arrive.

Motorola seems to be preparing an update for multiple devices. When we first reported about the Razr’s soak test earlier this week the feeling was that it was NOT Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich rather a general software update alongside Android 2.3.6.

Next we saw that the Motorola Photon 4G users were invited to a soak test. Of course the Photon 4G and the Atrix 4G are very similar so naturally Motorola as now seeking feedback from Photon 4G owners.

While we want to be cautious when it comes to what this update might be, with multiple devices getting soak test invites there is the possibility that Motorola is preparing a big push to ICS.

AT&T Has “Best Ever” Smartphone Sales In Q4

January 26th, 2012

If you thought AT&T would be down in out after their exclusive, flagship iPhone went to Verizon as well you were wrong. Very wrong, in fact, after their 2011 Q4 results came in they announced a fantastic quarter with smartphone sales through the roof. AT&T added to their 103.2 million subscribers by 2.5 million over the holidays, boasting a huge revenue in Apple’s iPhone sales.

On the Android end, sales doubled for a whopping 9.4 million smartphones sold, a large amount being Android devices. This was again, the best quarter ever for AT&T’s smartphone sales, meaning Big Red’s huge subscriber list and iDevice lineup really hasn’t changed things too much. People are still choosing AT&T, and even with Apple’s new iPhone 4S coming to both carriers at the same time, many AT&T subscribers opted to stay with their beloved carrier instead of jumping ship for Verizon’s shiny 4GLTE network.

Samsung Galaxy Note Feb 18th For $299?

January 25th, 2012

The tablet/phone hybrid announced back at IFA in Berlin in September and known to the world as the Samsung Galaxy Note has been pegged for a February 18th release date on AT&T. The best part of the news is the price, which is $299 on a new two year agreement.

At $299 that puts the 5.3″ Galaxy Note with it’s digital “S-Pen” coming in at the same release price as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the Droid Razr Maxx over on Verizon. While some may balk at a $300 device on contract, it’s a lot better than we original thought.

For The Second Year In A Row Sony Confirms Commitment To Android

January 19th, 2012

Last year at Mobile World Congress then Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg said that Sony Ericsson was committed to Android. Now, a year later, Sony has decided to buy out Ericsson and we’re not sure if Nordberg will be around for the party. One thing is for sure though, the new Sony Mobile Communications unit is going to continue on, full tilt with Android.

Sony’s biggest challenge in the United States has been securing carrier deals. They’ve got great, beautiful, stylish hardware. Most of their Android devices run a Bravia mobile engine fueled by the same technology that make Sony flat screen 3D and 2D televisions must haves for the living room.

Even Sony’s Timescape UI isn’t as much of a bother as other manufacturers proprietary UI’s.
